Lovely place, highly recommend the pizza!! The only thing we didn't like was the soup of the day, much too sour and weird taste. But otherwise lovely vibes. Pizza definitely one of the best I've ever had
Nice atmosphere, different areas in the pub for different parties. The chocolate fondant with salted caramel ice cream and forest berries was excellent, one of the best desserts I've ever had! Parking a little precarious but can't be helped.Food: 4/5
So… an average 2 stars I feel is fair. We drove about an hour out of the way to come here. The place is nice. A quintessential British English pub with nice people, sweet dogs and a warm log burner. Very trad. But middling to poor with the food. If you’re not bothered about food then this is a great family pub. However if you like your food to be tasty and most importantly if you don’t want to feel you have been ripped off then avoid this pub. We ordered the “Abingdon Arms Special - Honey glazed slow cooked wild goose breast with smoked bacon, savoy cabbage, gnocchi and creamy sauce” there was something weird going on with this dish. The meat was really tough and the cabbage in the creamy sauce mixture normally a great combo was too bitter and there wasn’t any depth to the sauce mixture. We had to send it back. The other dish was “Smoked duck breast served with quail egg & garlic roasted vegetables”. It’s a starter so much smaller than a main but it arrived without the quail eggs. When we inquired about the quail egg they took the plate plonked a grand total of 1 quail egg on it and returned it. A country pub should be able to serve a couple of these and unfortunately to add insult to injury it was a pickled quail’s egg. 1 pickled quails egg added after asking for it… Talk about skimping! The beef brisket that replaced the goose was much better. The lovely clientele who sat next to us and chatted to us for a bit saved the day.
We had a lunch to celebrate a new baby and the team at Abingdon Arms were very accommodating and helpful. It was a wonderful lunch, the food was great and the views from the garden was lovely too. Would highly recommend.
Had a great meal here on Saturday night. Really friendly staff and great service! The food was equally amazing! Would 10/10 recommend and will definitely be coming back :
You can tell the quality of a good eatery by its toilets lol - I’m pleased to report they’re impeccable. Enjoyed delicious pizzas which were truly superb with the most idyllic environment to add to the ambiance. Definitely worth a stop. The author Evelyn Waugh of ‘Brideshead Revisited’ fame wrote some of his best works here.
The attention to detail for every single menu item is remarkable. Great service, excellent food, beautiful view. Highly recommended! Vegetarian options: Multiple vegetarian items in the menu Kid-friendliness: Great spot for bringing kids as there is a play space available Parking: About a dozen parking spots on location
Absolutely delightful place. We lunched there on a Saturday after the first half of our walk in the area. Menu and food superb and well-priced. Portion sizes just right and service friendly and efficient. A few well-kept beers on tap. My only sorrow was that I couldn't stay longer!
We visited this pub as it was a stone's through from our Air BnB on an anniversary trip to Oxford. Our host recommended this place for their 'beautiful' wood fired pizza. Being a pizza chef for 5 years, i thought I'd make my own judgement thank you very much... We began with the Calamari which was probably the tatsiest combo I've had to date, with garlic sauce & tomato salad thing. We chose the rustic and 4 cheese pizza and split the two between us. Not going to lie but they were delishous. From the tomato base to the abundance in quality toppings. I can give a solid rating of 9.9. 2nd to my own 10/10 pizzas. One thing though, somehow the girlfriends sauvignon blanc had a hint of raw vegetables to it?
Very disappointing meal, unfortunately. Ordered the fish and chips and got a fried fin with nine chips and a thimble full of ketchup. After inquiring whether this was indeed the portion that the chef intended to serve, it was pointed out to me that I had overlooked the qualifier “light” in the menu. Although “light” definitely applied to the portion, it did not apply to the price at £13.50. Sadly, the fish and chips was not the only disappointment that evening. The “veggie sharing platter” was more like a parody on vegetarians than a sharing platter, consisting of a few clumsily scattered pieces of salad vegetables, fried humus and cheese balls. The Abingdon Arms used to be one of the best pubs to eat around Oxford. Sadly, this doesn’t seem to be the case anymore.
