Good place for lunch. Accepts online reservation, although it's so big you may not need one. Food was good, if a bit too salty, as most pub food is. Food arrived in 10 minutes, which is super quick by any standard. And finally, thank you Nell for the lovely service!
The food was incredible!! The mushy peas were amazing and the fish and chips and starters were great as well! Loved the order by phone and the toilet was incredible space as well. Food and the drinks were great but the customer service let them down. A lot of the staff really felt like they did not wanted to serve the customers and when we asked for water, we were asked to get it ourselves which was ok but it could have been said nicer. A lot of the tables were not cleaned so if this can be fixed it will be even better. The insides atmosphere is quite different to the garden outside so having some continuation will be even better. Incredible food thou!!
We went as a group so the service took ages, the staff were very friendly but starters were coming out before we got the drinks order, there is not a great selection on the menu if you are vegan or have a potato or yeast allergy, in fairness the food that I could eat was lovely, definitely recommend the halloumi fries. None in the group complained about the food just about the wait. There were a few issues with some dirty cutlery and cutlery missing from the table which is why I marked them down slightly, I would still recommend you try it though, oh and check out the female bathrooms whilst there, you won't be disappointed Vegetarian options: There is not a great selection on the menu for vegetarian or vegan but I'm sure the chef would accommodate Parking: Parking is about a 5 mins walk but the paid parking lot, it is £6.90 for 2 hours but it took us 3 hours from arriving to eating so definitely you will need at least 4 hours covering you. Dietary restrictions: The menu doesn't disclose ingredients so this would have to be clarified with the chef, I have a yeast and potato intolerance so I can't eat them at all, there was very little on the menu to suit myself.
Good atmosphere? Friendly service but food not worth the money asked for. Dry bread on starter that was very dry itself, cold and uninspiring. Tasty belly pork roast main with raw root vegetables and cold soggy Yorkshire pudding but a very tasty gravy. Cauliflower cheese extra was pink which I couldn't quite tell why!
The food was excellently prepared by Joe chef and served by Nell the kindest and friendliest waitress. We chose 2 Dirty burgers as mains, which were one of the best burgers I've had in the UK I try one in every town/city I visit: the meat was of good quality, perfectly grilled and soft to bite. The Caesar salad was also very tasty. Unfortunately, no pictures uploaded of the burgers, as they were consumed immediately : As dessert, we selected the churros and the toffee pudding: both were very rich, flavourful and tasty and, especially the churros, were on a different level! The Red Lion is a definite "must visit" for food when in Oxford-I know I will !!!
Might be a bit harsh as the place only had 2 staff on floor/Bar area the lady behind the bar was amazing and really friendly and the guy running food was polite if not a bit rushed off his feet sorting whole restaurant out. This place has so many different nooks and crannies it looked empty but there was quite a lot of people for one person to deal with. My main reason it scores low was the food. My gammon and eggs was actually ok but person I was with had fish cakes which came with a supposed lemon veloute which was the most underwhelming sauce I'd ever tried. I'm an ex chef so know a good sauce this was as far away from this as could be. No seasoning, no depth of flavour and limp in consistency. The fishcakes looked like they had been chucked in a dirty deep fat fryer and were too crunchy. And the poached egg looked as deflated as we were eating this dish.Absolutely no finesse. The red lion is trying to be a gastropub but with food like that costing nearly £16 it was a huge let down. Wetherspoons could do food almost as good and it would be half the price and a pint would cost £3 rather than £6. The place looks lovely and huge amount of space and garden. The staff were 85% good. Food was just annoyingly plain and without skill. Hire a new chef is my advice. I'm happy to come and show chef how to a make a lemon veloute which is a entry level skill sauce!! Wheelchair accessibility: No the best and got very little help from staff as struggled out of back door. Then had to navigate a very crowded garden which required me to have to move 3 big chairs. Again no help from staff.
Food was absolutely beautiful, although pricey most definitely worth the money the service is amazing and they really take a attention to detail to the next level, greeted by friendly accommodating staff , the quality of everything they do is just stunning. Would definitely recommend.
Great Sunday Roast! Perfect portion. Sticky Toffee pudding was so yummy! All staff are very friendly.Food: 5/5
Our dining experience was the best. The sea bass was excellent. Service from Nell was ‘top shelf’ I would recommend the Red Lion to anyone looking for a great dinner in Oxford.
The date roast was good value for money. Not the best roast spuds ..chalky. veg tasted a bit raw.. Nice gravy .
