Superb place to eat. Family run business and dog friendly.
We have visited this cafe several times and it has always been OK, nothing great but nothing too bad. However over the last few months things seem to have gone downhill rapidly. The establishment could certainly do with a deep clean and staff need to be more attentive to clearing and wiping tables. Today things were particularly poor. One of the waiting staff was so confident that she came over as quite rude and abrupt. The other waiter certainly lacked confidence and could have done with some staff training. We couldn't find a menu and eventually requested one from staff. After a ten minute wait our orders were taken. Poor quality hot drinks were served after another ten minutes. We asked for hot milk with our coffee and cold was served. After another long wait we were told one of our orders was not available so we ordered something else. Food was extremely poor and after complaining we were not charged for one meal. We witnessed complaints and order mix ups at five tables excluding ourselves. We would certainly NOT recommended a visit to this establishment as there are plenty more establishment in Durham City centre offering excellent service and good quality food
Outstandingly good in my experience - the full English breakfast is a great deal. Also the coffee is good along with the significant portion sizes with the cakes. They do some gluten free stuff and are dog friendly too!
Lovely little quaint cafe in the heart of Durham City UK. Very friendly and attentive staff. Lovely food and coffee. Would highly recommend this to anyone visiting the city. 4 stars given as, I would recommend that the senior member of staff should not get tied up behind the counter as they should be able to interact with the customers front of house.
Excellent small cafe on a side path by the river. Excellent value for money, especially breakfasts. It has a cosy rustic atmosphere, always busy. The staff are lovely and location is perfect. It is located down a flight of stairs so may not be suitable for wheelchair users.
I found this a very average place. Staff were pleasant and attentive. However, the seating area upstairs was absolutely freezing. Even when most tables were occupied and I'd been there an hour it didn't feel any warmer. Skirting boards and windowsill could do with a good clean as they were very dusty and had a lot of cobwebs. Coffee was fairly ordinary but I did enjoy my eggy bread and bacon. When I left, and until I was able to go home and get changed, the smell of stale grease clung to my clothes and hair. All in all disappointing and as there are much better coffee houses in the city I won't be going back.
Went into 9 Alters, a young girl served us and we ordered two full English breakfasts £4.50 each plus a scone and flat white which came to £13.90. The scone and flat white were brought out and only one full English breakfast. I went in to check if the second full English was on its way and an older lady with dark hair said that we had only ordered one, which wasn't true at all considering we had literally just paid for two. The second full English was finally brought out, and the same lady rudely and obnoxiously told us again that the reason two full English breakfasts never came out was because we had only paid for one and that we would be charged for it on top of the £13.90 we had already paid. I then tried to tell her she was wrong as obviously one full english breakfast was worth £4.50, and a scone and flat white would not have made up for the extra £9.40, but she cut me off and screamed "Whatever! The breakfasts are £4.50!" then stormed back inside. My girlfriend ate her breakfast alone as we had both finished a while ago and we all felt uncomfortable and unwelcome. I then went inside to get a menu to double check the price of what we had ordered, I was then rudely asked by the same woman what I was doing, then she told me that we had in fact paid the right amount and then immediately turned around without any apology or acknowledgement to the fact she was wrong the entire time. This is somewhere we've all been coming for years and we all feel really disappointed to have been treat in such a manner. Having worked in a few cafes and bars in Durham myself I completely understand that mistakes get made but this was handled with the utmost imcompetence and I highly recommend this woman takes some lessons in basic customer service skills. I'd also like to clarify that the young girl who served us originally was incredibly polite and is not to blame at all.
Amazing deals for a full English and coffee in the morning. The cakes are huge but while impressive, usually means they're very dry. This may depend on how long they've been on display, but I've had 2 bad experiences.
Lovely, small independent cafe. Food was very reasonable and tasty, the reasonably quick and friendly. One of the few places in Durham you can sit outside to eat lunch next to the river. Well worth a visit.
Lovely little cafe in a great location. Fantastic staff and good range of food available- I always follow whatever they recommend. Very small but very pretty upstairs or if the weather's good you can enjoy the river view without feeling like you're too much in the centre of town.
