First time eating Turkish food and fell in love with this cuisine immediately, The lamb is tender and flavourful, salad is fresh and taste unique, the Turkish flatbread is amazing! the staff-Ashmil is super friendly! No wonder my auntie has been here for 10 years, this restaurant become my favourite spot now
We walked in a group of 5 and got a table straight away. It’s really hot inside so definitely don’t wear your jumper here. You’ll warm up very quickly! The waiter came over & didn’t have a pen and paper but remembered the whole order! We got so many starters and mains each as well as drinks. Everything came out perfectly. The only thing I would say is that the price is actually quite high - which I wasn’t expecting. However, makes sense cause the quality is great. Definitely a good treat!
The charcoal grill lamb ribs is a must have. It’s flavourful and tender. We ordered the Tarama, Aubergine Yogurt, Flat bread and Quail as well and those are rather standardFood: 4/5
At Umut 2000 in Dalston, we ordered Ali Nazik, lamb chops, and lamb liver. The kebabs were delicious. After our rakı order, they gave us cacık and grilled mushrooms on the house. However, they don’t serve tea and only accept cash—no card or bank transfers, which I find inconvenient. It’s also quite noisy inside.Food: 5/5
Delicious juicy meats cooked over coal so you get that smokey taste on every bite. Excellent flat breads that are used in the wraps. The only small improvement would be slightly larger portions of rice. NB: They only take cash!! Open late!
They put their bread on the grills so it’s meat flavoured. Literally the most delicious bread you’ll eat ever. Lamb ribs are also delish. My fave Turkish restaurant in London. Cash only though!Food: 5/5
For years, I had been eager to visit this place, drawn by tales of their delicious ribs and the cozy, down-to-earth vibe at the hole-in-the-wall known as Umut 2000. Its funky name and reputation for tasty Turkish dishes added to its allure. Unfortunately, my experience left me disappointed and dispelled the myth I had cherished. As they say, never meet your heroes; you might be let down, and that certainly rang true for me. My disillusionment began when I ordered the platter for four. The portion size was so small that the "2000" in the restaurant's name seemed to stand more for the calorie count of a single meal. It felt like we were distributing food as sparingly as the Red Cross, not enjoying a hearty meal out. For a hefty £70, I expected more than the scant offering served, especially the bulgur, which was so minimal it seemed like decorative garnish rather than part of the meal. Additionally, the restaurant's cash-only policy was a significant inconvenience. While I’d like to think this stance is a critique of our tap-and-go culture and the pervasive spread of technology, it felt more suspect than principled. Searching for a cash machine to settle my bill felt as desperate as a crackhead on the hunt for the next fix, ironically burning off more calories than those contained in my meal. This might explain the "2000" in their name—it's a warning of what to expect. The only upside? I ended up in a calorie deficit, handy with summer on the horizon. Lastly, the restaurant is so small and tightly packed close to the charcoal grill that there’s a fine line between waiting for your meal and becoming your meal. I won’t be falling for this trap again.
The food here is consistently excellent. My previous review was 5*. However, they just charged me £2.50 for chilli/garlic sauce which I feel goes against the commonly understood laws of Turkish food and hospitality. Why do this? Petty. So many great Turkish restaurants in Dalston, why would I go back to Umut after this?
Great lamb beyti. Service a bit off. Rice arrived 5 minutes after meat. Would give it another go!Food: 4/5
Busy Friday night great atmosphere. Tables very close together. Large portion of hummus which was lovely and smooth and creamy. Lots of hot bread. Salads good. chicken shish very disappointing. Horrible petroleum, lighter fluid, briquette taste.. cooked on coals where chemicals not burnt off. not nice at all. Not enough ice in the drinks. juice was warm.
