Story

Whitley Bay Ice Rink is an ice rink located in Whitley Bay, Tyne and Wear, England and is the home of the Whitley Warriors ice hockey team. An additional team played out of the ice rink, the Newcastle Vipers, who are now disbanded. It is one of two permanent public ice rinks in the north east of England. A ten-pin bowling centre in the area upstairs which was added in the 1960s was closed in 2007.AboutIt was also the region's premier concert venue, until the Newcastle Arena (now Metro Radio Arena) opened in 1995. Artists that have performed at the venue include Status Quo, AC/DC, The Cure, Iron Maiden, KISS, Metal Church, Metallica, Kylie Minogue, New Kids on the Block, Oasis, Pet Shop Boys, Sting, The Stone Roses and Take That, among others.

We've decided to take up skating as a family and this is our closest rink. The ice is fairly good in general, definitely not wet, although condensation drips can make for rough spots in places. It's also a reasonably big rink and while it isn't new it's perfectly functional. The public skating sessions are 2 hours long. We've not been terribly impressed with the skates they hire. It can take quite a few iterations to find ones that aren't blunt. We've bought our own adult skates now (there's a good shop on site), and second-hand ones for the kids, as having your own sharp skates makes all the difference. There are quite a few instructors available if you want private lessons and they seem reasonably priced. If you have weekdays available, it's a really good quiet time to meet the instructor and the ice is really smooth. There are group adult and children's lessons available too.

Started skating as a hobby in February and really enjoy it. The adult lessons cater for all abilities and the coaches are helpful and friendly. The ice surface here isn't always the best, the hire skates are not great, and the decor is very dated, but overall it's a good place to learn to skate.

Cold, dark and dank, an ice rink with character and a lot of history. Lovely people as well.

The staff are friendly, the skaters always seem to be friendly too, the shop on site is great value particularly if you want to buy skates. If you have lessons the coaches are great, really effective and non-judgemental teachers.
