White Horse
"The White Horse is a delightful pub in Hatching Green. Five minutes from the bustling centre of Harpenden on the one hand & Junction 9 of the M1 on the other, the pub has a lovely country setting, surrounded by a large leafy garden & terrace. The bar is warm & cosy, with old parquet & low beams hung with antique copper jugs, while the dining room is light & fresh, its French windows opening onto a sunny terrace. In our charming private dining room, up a winding stair in the oldest part of the pub, we can comfortably host a dinner party for twelve."

I'd give The White Horse six stars if I could. We came here for dinner one evening recently, Jozef took care of us from start to finish, talking us through the menu and drinks, answering all my pedantic questions about how things were served! The food was first rate, the menu offered up loads to choose from, the staff and service were superb and the place itself - particularly outdoors - is perfectly located and really pleasant. We will be going again soon. Parking: Big car park, plenty of spaces, and right next to Rothamsted Park with more space nearby. Wheelchair accessibility: Toilets are all ground floor.
Went for a dinner on A Friday night better to book in advance for high demand days. The service was great so as food: really enjoyed the beef pie and desserts. Chicken schnitzel was ok nothing wrong- just a normal chicken schnitzel. Want to come back for breakfast. Not too expensive and good food and service.
I hadn’t visited here for maybe 10 years but dropped by for a drink and a rest while out on a Sunday afternoon country walk. Pleased to see that the traditional frontage of the pub remains relatively unchanged, as does the small, attractive bar area. Only two ales on offer at the time but my Greene King IPA was good and the staff were friendly. For the past 15 years this place has focused upon being a gastropub rather than a locals’ place, but nevertheless it manages both reasonably well. In addition to the main restaurant at the back there is also a dining room off the bar area where dogs are allowed. The outside has been developed during the past two years into a very attractive, partially covered space. Will definitely return to try the food again.
Excellent food! And a lovely atmosphere. Can't go wrong with a Peach pub. We went as two couples and travelled quite a way to dine here. All of our food was to a very good standard. Was a little disappointed at the end of the meal being told quite firmly we cannot pay cash. The server told us we would have been made aware of this when a booking confirmation email was sent. I showed the emails and it said nothing about being cashless. Hopefully they will update the details on OpenTable and on their website. Apart from this lack of communication, I would highly recommend the White Horse. Looking forward to going back hopefully sometime soon. Parking: Limited
Been a few times but the first for Sunday Lunch outside under the canopy on a hot day. Excellent friendly service and nice pork lunch followed by pavlova . Constructive personal opinion would be more veg, possibly red cabbage or cauliflower but enjoyed the meal and the ambience .
Lovely pub and great service. Four of us had a meal and all meals were really good. One beef pie, the chicken schnitzel and two lamb. Wine menu choices were both good and affordable. One little niggle though, two of us had the lamb and the menu just said ' lamb', not the tiniest thin lamb cutlet which was a little overcooked. At 22.00 I think at least two cutlets would be more appropriate considering how small they were. We didn't mention this to the server as the dish was still really nice despite the tiny cutlet. But I won't be ordering the lamb again. The restaurant was: busy yet service was still good, tastefully decorated and definitely somewhere I'd go again.
Following a fairly poor experience at The White Horse just before Christmas I was contacted by the owners Peach Pubs to ask what the issue was. I gave the person dealing with the enquiry my reasons and explained why things were not so great that evening. They asked If I would consider returning and offered me some complimentary drinks etc to which I agreed. This is how customer service should be . We had a lovely evening , with the service and food being very good . I also have to mention Ellie at Peach Pubs for dealing with the matter in the way that she did - she must be a credit to the company !
Parking is terrible here, not necessarily the venues fault but people think it's OK to take up 3 spaces when space is limited, staff were nice and helpful, roast was nice but only 2 slices of meat! Not work nearly £20! Deserts took ages to arrive then we were told one wasn't available after we had waited ages! The deserts were removed from the bill which was welcomed but not good to make us sit and wait and then tell us! Probably won't go back as other places to try
Nice pub. Great seating areas, very dog friendly and friendly staff. Food was ok, friends had a roast but were not overly impressed. Small portions with only 3 roasties and very little veg. Only option for me was a curry....not the best on a Sunday when everyone else had a roast sucks there is no gf option for non meat eaters..... dessert however were amazing! Great choice Great portions and super delicious.
Excellent pub, good food, always friendly staff. Glorious to sit outside on a sunny day- but even on a cold, miserable winter day you are made to feel warmly welcome. With Rothamstead Park and the Common on its door-step it is a great place to retreat to after a long walk
