All the time we have been to Whitby I’ve never been into the Abby. So glad we did it was spectacular and the sun beamed down on us.nThe volunteer a lovely retired woman was absolutely knowledgeable on the ruin. Doing a great job.
Fantastic day out. Worth knowing that the nearby car park about ten minutes max is free in the winter - Google it for exact dates. You can walk between Whitby itself and the Abbey but be aware there are lots of steps and it is very steep
A fair bit of walking but well worth it! Absolutely stunning views of both the ruins & the sea it overlooks. Although it was beautifully sunny, it is very windy on this exposed part of the coast so wrap up well & enjoy the breathtaking views
The abbey is in ruins because Henry VIII was not allowed to divorce his wife, and so he turned away from the Pope and established his own church. He ordered the abbeys to be destroyed and these are the remnants. It is still great to see the wonderful abbey and imagine what it was like before, standing over the city. What a great view over the city
We visited today. Was a group of 3. There is disabled access including a lift from the gift shop and some ramps outside. The main museum part is possibly inaccessible by anything bigger than a buggy. We spent around 2 hours there. The Abbey is a link to the past and it's easy to see why it has influenced so many authors and artists.
