Great iconic place, viewed from a distance or close up. We had decided to have a year with English Heritage a little while ago, so for the two of us there was no charge to enter, but would have been £26 otherwise pensioners, which we think is too much. Also would have had to pay for parking as well, even as members, but we found an on street spot just outside the car park.nSo, a fantastic place to visit if you are a member or working with a good wage, otherwise a lot of money for anyone on a small pension.
Stunning place! Atmospheric and beautiful.nParking at the Headland car park is easy.nWe paid to go into the ruins area and also walked around the church.nWe visited on fortunately a very clear and warm day. Be warned! I can imagine it could get very blowy up there!!nToilets, cafe, museum and gift shop also available.
We visited the Abbey on a weekday in mid-September 2024. This meant it was far less busy as the school holidays were over.nWe parked in the top car park near the Abbey which had plenty of spaces when we arrived at 11am. We purchased 6 hours parking which seemed like decent value and had options to pay via card or app.nWe have English Heritage annual passes so we didn't have to pay for the Abbey.nThere are toilets just before you enter the Abbey and are run by the council and cost 50p to enter.nThe Abbey itself was a nice visit but bare in mind doesn't take long to look around, perhaps 45 minutes at most.nThe gift shop was good and we purchased some Whitby Gin after trying some at the tasting table.nWe had a coffee in the YHA cafe for a nice flat white before we then went walking into Whitby down the 200 steps.nVery nice day with plenty of walking.
A great heritage site. The area is well maintained and the ruins are very impressive. The museum on-site is really interesting and well done. The shop was also full of local merchandise. All the Dracula things were fun too! The cafe had a varied menu that was all tasty.nnThere was a decent sized parking lot that meant you didn't need to try to park in the town which was very busy. They also accept other heritage memberships and I was able to gain entry through my Histpric Scotland membership.
Completed the 199 Steps up to the Abbey, which is not difficult by any means, but still gives you a sense of accomplishment! The site is well organised and clearly a lot of money has been spent on restoration and as much of the site as possible is accessible. This is reflected in the slightly higher than usual entry fee of £11/12. I was really impressed with the museum shop and especially Emily who was full of local knowledge, local suggestions, banter and plenty of Whitby charm.
