Church of Saint Mary

Story

The Church of Saint Mary is an Anglican parish church serving the town of Whitby in North Yorkshire England. It was founded around 1110, although its interior dates chiefly from the late 18th century. The church was designated a Grade I listed building on 23 February 1954. It is situated on the town's east cliff, overlooking the mouth of the River Esk overlooking the town, close to the ruins of Whitby Abbey. Church Steps, a flight of 199 steps lead up the hill to the church from the streets below. The church graveyard is used as a setting in Bram Stoker's novel, Dracula.ArchitectureA Norman church was built on the site around 1110 and added to and altered over the centuries. The tower and transepts are from the 12th and 13th centuries. The tower is square and crenellated, as are the walls. One of the oldest parts of the church is the quire which has three round-headed windows at its east end. Its side walls originally had three bays with similar windows but have been altered. It has three aumbries, one with a small piscina. The nave has five bays and is contemporary with the quire, its south wall is much altered but three external buttresses remain. When the church was enlarged in 1818 most of the north wall was removed and replaced by columns to accommodate an aisle, four large square-headed windows were inserted on the south side, the south porch was built in 1823 and a north porch built in the new annexe. The ceilings over the nave are boarded with several skylights. The transept was built in the 13th century and has three altered lancet windows in its northern arm while its southern arm is considerably changed and its windows all replaced. A squint cuts through from the south transept to the quire.

There is so much history in this church, it dates back to the 11 hundreds and has been added to on many occasions throughout the centuries, it was certainly a very nice experience visiting here today.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
Really quirky and interesting church that is probably what people see from afar and think is part of the abbey whose ruined walls you can see actually sit behind it! Open to the public FREE of charge, donations welcome. Small shop counter stall set up in the vestibule selling items to raise funds for upkeep. Would gladly buy and donate here rather than pay the outrageous English Heritage fees to see the abbey which is about 100m away. Inside the church is odd arrangement of pews and the raised central windows/skylights around the ceiling I’ve never seen anywhere before. Some reading material and history of church on display. Well worth the trip up the steps from Whitby.
It is an Anglican Church in Whitby. It is located near the Whitby Abbey. It dates back up to the 12th century. The church is fully surrounded by the graves of the faithful. I am not sure whether it has any service. The church has places allocated for persons or families as the structure shows. The cemetery here seems to have reference in the novel Dracula.
This church was a nice place on the walk to Whitby Abbey Just next door. We had walked up the 199 steps and had a nice view of Abbey in the graveyard. It has a very chilled vibe considering its a church with graves all around. Amazing views all around. Benches to sit on.
Absolutely stunning and historical I love that this place has a spooky story attached to it vampires and Dracula himself right is full of extremely historical things and graves from the 17th century and older... I found it incredible.. places like this in UK are becoming increasingly rare so don't miss out..
Impressive location top of hill, beautiful architecture. The church is on top of the 199 steps with a large old cemetery around it. The views of the landscape, the valleys, the town of Whitby, the cliffs are among the best I have seen in my life. A stroll at night through the cemetery was amazingly nice and eerie at the same time. It's safe and the views at night are incredible as well.
Amazing ancient church on a unique hillside location just beneath The ruins of Whitby Abbey and overlooking the Harbour of Whitby below. The interior feels as if it has been fitted out by shipwrights ....quite extraordinary experience!Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo wait
Free entry to charming church that sits above the east cliff of Whitby at the top of the famous 199 steps and just before the abbey. The design of pew boxes is the most noticeable aspect and there's plenty of information boards and friendly volunteers to explain about it's design and history. There's a little shop selling cards, gifts and second hand books etc. Include it in your must see list of Whitby as it really is rather special and tranquil place in the most beautiful of settings. Kudos to the volunteers who keep it in order and greet visitors with good cheer. I was very charmed by it all.
Interesting church. For some reason I’ve not felt like I am in the church. It looks interesting from outside, but inside something is not right. Don’t know why, when you inside you have a strange feeling. Outside the stones on the grave yard are really old, some names can’t be read as they worn out by the winds.
Very interesting church with unique features. Enjoyed my visit here. The stewards were very friendly and the place is welcoming. If you are visiting the 199 steps or the Abbey I would recommend a visit to this place. It is also a good place to reflect.
