Definitely worth a try if you’ve never had one and true-to-memory if you’re a wheelcake fan. Wheelcakes are a dessert made from a fluffy pancake-like batter, cooked in cast iron pans, with a creamy filling inside. Price: £10 for 4 which I’d recommend so you can sample the different custard flavours! They’re made freshly, on-site, so the custard filling is hot when you get them. ⏰ Waiting time: Being freshly-made does mean that you may have to wait around 10min for your order depending how busy they are—but it’s well worth it and there’s so much to see at Old Spitalfields Market while you wait. You’ll get a ticket number so you can come back and collect your order. Menu: The wheelcakes come in a variety of flavours. Vanilla custard is the golden standard but I also tried: the matcha, azuki bean and chocolate my favourites are in that order too but it’s definitely down to personal flavour preference. Wheelcakes are each marked with a symbol so you know which one you’re eating image added for reference. I’ll definitely be back!
Stopped here due to my friend asking me to get her some of the wheel cakes to try, and out of curiosity I decided to try one myself too! Before buying I asked if they could be reheated as my friend wanted to try them warm, and conveniently they have a card advising how they should be stored and reheated if necessary which I found super helpful! As for the cake, I tried the matcha one. It was served hot and although I enjoyed it I feel the flavour wasn't as strong as I would have liked. I can't say for the other flavours!
We had a chocolate custard wheel cake. Was nice, warm and gooey. Will go again.Food: 5/5
It's alright. Nothing too great. If you like pancake then you will like this too, as the kind of batter they use is similar in texture and taste to the batter used for pancakes. This just wasn't for me. We ordered the chocolate with custard filling and boy was it scalding hot on the inside. Just be careful when you eat one.
Quite good, not too sweet and crispy outside. I would have like the azuki bean paste to be smoother and the cake to be a tiny bit thinner. The vanilla cream is good. Overall, quite good.
The wheelcake with chocolate and vanilla custard flavour was very good and something that’s worth trying second time. The one with matcha did was not up to my taste and the other two kinds were gone closer to 6pm on a Saturday so I did not have a chance to try themRecommended dishesChocolate & Custard, Custard Chocolate
While wondering around Spitafield Market, @wheelcakeisland caught my eye with their delicious looking and freshly baked before your eyes Taiwanese filled pancakes I couldn't resist and bought 3 of their flavours to try: Adzuki Bean sweet, Matcha and Chocolate mixed with Vanilla Custard The experience was... a bit underwhelming The dough was still a bit undercooked and the flavours did not live up to the expectations. I did enjoy the 'chocolate' one, but I don't really consider nutella an actual chocolate flavour ‍ just my opinion. The matcha one was just ok, as it tasted more of vanilla custard, rather than matcha Sadly I found the adzuki beans not to my taste at all, as it was barely sweet and beans were only half way made to paste. It was not good... I really wish I had a better experience, as I was really excited to try them! I might give them another go if they come out with other flavours to try
Absolutely fell in love with this place! Concept is cool, unique and you feel like you get exposed to such a great peculiar treat. This company focuses on the cakes and they do it well! I tried the vanilla custard and the limited edition rose cake. Vanilla was okay but the rose was absolutely amazing! Cakes are not too sweet but ideal if you want to maybe try something new to the usual western pastel de natas or similar. Very friendly service and swift actioning. Worth a try!
We ordered and was told it would be a 20minute wait, we appreciated being told before making the order but we were happy to wait. The outside dough was dry and the inside was still a little undercooked. My wife really enjoyed the matcha filling, it was subtle and not too strong. I preferred the chocolate and custard. I didn’t really enjoy it that much, but wasn’t bad, it was a shame the inside was still undercooked. Worth a try!
I got 4 wheel cakes. Matcha , red bean, chocolate and custard. All as nice especially custard. The rd bean was not too great as i thought it would be a paste but it was chunky.
