A fascinating museum of local history, run by volunteers, right in the centre of Fort William. Came here while on holiday, and was welcomed by a really nice lady who told me everything I needed to know about what there was to see and where to find it. Admission is free, but it's well worth making a donation. You're allowed to take photos, and dogs are allowed in on a lead. The three floors there are stairlifts to the upper ones are crammed with artefacts and information covering a wide range of subjects, including archaeology, the region's wildlife and geology, mountain rescue, costumes and tartans, musical instruments, WW2 and much more. Especially interesting to me was the gallery devoted to the Jacobites and Bonnie Prince Charlie. Some of his clothing and personal belongings were on display, and I could climb a couple of steps to peer at his secret portrait. The artefacts from the sunken Spanish galleon are also not to be missed! There are toilets at the back of the museum, next to the natural history gallery, and a nice little shop where you can buy souvenirs and books about Scottish history. You can go around the museum in an hour, but I found it so absorbing I spent three hours here. A great introduction to my tour of the Scottish Highlands and islands!
This was a great museum we found when we stopped in Fort William for lunch. The volunteers were so interesting and helpful. I was slow, looking at everything, so I didn't make it to the top floor. However, my daughter did and said the temporary exhibit there was the best explanation she'd ever seen of the Tudors. We were there in August 2022. Recommend!
Great little museum showing some local and overall Scottish history. The museum staff were very kind and informative. If you are in Fort William check this place out! Its free!
I absolutely loved the museum. There were so many things to see and read. I learned quite a lot. I also enjoyed the use of video/film. I believe there were two sections where you could sit and watch to learn. Adding various modes of learning was wonderful.nnThe volunteers were friendly and the gift shop had a lot of cool things! My partner got themself a small claymore. Please consider donating to this museum to support them!
I would feel guilty if I didn't leave a review of the place that I intended to, and did, see first during the time I stayed at a Fort William hotel.nBecause I had planned to see a few other places before catching a train shortly after midday I set an alarm on my phone, allowing me 45 minutes at the museum. I got round in only 10 minutes using a walking stick but was well pleased with what I had seen. I particularly liked seeing the tree rings see photo.nShortly before leaving I noticed a plaque commemorating when the museum had first been opened. I went out then had to go back in to take a photo of it.nThe museum had become a part of what turned out to be a very memorable 5 days.nI bought a very memorable memento to take back home with me. I had imagined telling our driver that I had bought a miniature whilst in town, expecting him to say that it was probably a miniature whisky.nIT WAS A MINIATURE CLAYMORE.
