Wellington Church of Scotland

Story

Wellington Church is a congregation and parish church of the Church of Scotland, serving part of the Hillhead area of Glasgow, Scotland. The building is located on University Avenue, Glasgow, opposite the University of Glasgow.BuildingThe building was designed by the architect Thomas Lennox Watson and built between 1883 and 1884 for the United Presbyterian Church of Scotland ("U.P."), which joined with the Free Church of Scotland to become the United Free Church of Scotland in 1900.The exterior of church is notable for its magnificent neoclassical portico, complete with a colonnade of Corinthian columns in the style of an ancient Graecian temple. This neoclassical architecture was much favoured by United Presbyterian Church, in contrast to the Gothic Revival favoured by most other churches in the Victorian era.HistoryThe church's congregation was founded in 1792 as an "Anti-Burgher" congregation, which in 1820 became part of the United Secession Church (and in turn U.P. from 1847).

Japanese Matsuri- this was a free event and very engaging for children as well as the grown ups. I believe they run some classes for which you may need to pay and register separately, but otherwise this was a free event and lots of fun! We had a go at writing in Japanese, creating masterpieces from paper oh I mean origami and listen to some traditional Taiko Japanese drumming. Overall, I would recommend it.
Beautiful venue for a concert! I nearly fell down the steps in the balcony due to lighting and there are very few toilets.

My relationship with Wellington Church goes back to 1979 when I first came aware of their summer holiday programme. Since my first introduction, I have been part of Wellington Church's framework since, albeit on a more intermittent basis now.
