Wellington Church

Story

Wellington Church is a congregation and parish church of the Church of Scotland, serving part of the Hillhead area of Glasgow, Scotland. The building is located on University Avenue, Glasgow, opposite the University of Glasgow.BuildingThe building was designed by the architect Thomas Lennox Watson and built between 1883 and 1884 for the United Presbyterian Church of Scotland ("U.P."), which joined with the Free Church of Scotland to become the United Free Church of Scotland in 1900.The exterior of church is notable for its magnificent neoclassical portico, complete with a colonnade of Corinthian columns in the style of an ancient Graecian temple. This neoclassical architecture was much favoured by United Presbyterian Church, in contrast to the Gothic Revival favoured by most other churches in the Victorian era.HistoryThe church's congregation was founded in 1792 as an "Anti-Burgher" congregation, which in 1820 became part of the United Secession Church (and in turn U.P. from 1847).

Attended the International Welcome Club's recent Burns Night. It was a magnificent smorgasbord of cultural exchange, food and fellowship. The regular Conversation Café is also a fantastic feature. The Nessies are all stars!
Beautiful venue for a concert! I nearly fell down the steps in the balcony due to lighting and there are very few toilets.
Attended a politics history lecture in this building. Designed by Alexander 'The Greek' Thompson. I can think of no other facility more appropriate for such a theme. Absolutely stunning inside. Well worth a visit.
The Crypt Cafe rocks really cozy, good hearty food, and lovely people !!! Great place to study and unwind with friends
Simple and elegant. I was in for a, fantastic, concert and it was also very warm.
The building has great acoustics which rendered the Church organ and choir sound clear and powerful.
Wellington is an active Church of Scotland. I am a long term attender so this is an insiders viewpoint. Wellington is an inclusive, welcoming church. It has exceptional reflections from its preachers, marvellous music and a generous and diverse outreach to its local community, and nationally and internationally, given the size of its congregation and available resources. This involves reaching out to, and supporting students and staff of its near neighbour, the University of Glasgow and immigrants generally in Glasgow's West End and beyond Worship takes place in a building of architectural merit outside and in. The musical director has a magnifient, well maintained organ and excellent singers enhanced by scholars from the Royal Scottish Conservatoire to provide an exhilarating aural framework for services.
They have great music learning classes . Singing piano & violin
The Crypt Cafe is such a haven. Cheap and cheerful food and welcoming volunteer staff. Simplicity at its finest, always recommend this place, especially to students looking for a cheap lunch near the uni
It is very nice place
