University of Glasgow

Story

The Memorial Chapel at the University of Glasgow, Scotland, was consecrated on 4 October 1929, and is dedicated to the memory of the former students and staff of the University who lost their lives in the First and Second World Wars. It is located in the West Quadrangle of the Main Building of the University, and was designed by Sir John Burnet. The chapel is protected as a category A listed building.HistoryThe University's former premises on the High Street were on the site of an old Dominican monastery, known as the Black Friars, and the University used the friars' old church for services. The University subsequently relocated to Gilmorehill in 1870, although the New College was not finished for many years after, and there was at the time no chapel. The West Quadrangle of the new building was not enclosed on its west side originally; instead, staircases at either end of the court led onto The Square, where the Professors and Principal had their houses. The southern of these staircases was the Lion and Unicorn Staircase, which was relocated from its site in the Outer Court of the Old College. By 1900, the accommodation was already proving too small, and in 1914 it was decided to build a new wing enclosing the West Quadrangle, providing additional rooms and a Chapel.

Gorgeous scenery in the fall. Makes you feel like you’re in Hogwarts. There is a nice Museum and gift shop on the grounds. Unfortunately the cloisters were closed on our visit.
The Location of the university is perfect..it is situated on a hill top with the view of whole Glasgow city..one can easily see the history of the place from the structure. It is must go when you are in Glasgow..
Probably the most beautiful university I have ever seen, definitely worth of a visit. Besides that we were lucky enough to also see some graduation party, which made our experience even more exciting. :
Studying at the University of Glasgow has been an incredible experience. The campus is vibrant, with fantastic clubs like the Business Club, Judo Club, and Erasmus Society offering great networking, training, and social events. There are plenty of opportunities to study abroad; for example, I attended a business law summer school in Brussels with a scholarship. The West End, next to the campus, has many good Asian restaurants, and the canteen food in the JMS Building is pretty alright. With so many academic and social activities, the University of Glasgow is a dynamic and enriching place to study.
If you have a love for old beautiful universities, you should definetly visit the University of Glasgow.nnIt's very tourist friendly and has clear marked areas you can visit. As well a wonderful collection in their Hunterian Museum.nnNone of Harry Potter was filmed here afaik, but it definetly gives Hogwarts vibes as well.nnDo yourself a solid and have a walk through Kelvingrove whilest you're there.
