The University of Edinburgh

Story

The McEwan Hall is the graduation hall of the University of Edinburgh, in Edinburgh, the capital of Scotland. It was presented to the University in 1897 by William McEwan, brewer and politician, at a cost of £115,000. Sir Robert Rowand Anderson was the architect. The McEwan Hall is a Grade A listed building. The design was begun in 1876 and was largely undertaken by George Mackie Watson whilst working in the offices of Robert Rowand Anderson (with the masterplan clearly being by Rowand Anderson himself). It was built using stone from Prudham Quarry, Hexham in Northumberland. The exterior of the D-shaped hall was completed in 1894. The interior, finished in 1897, is built in Italian Renaissance style, and features mural decorations from the hand of William Mainwaring Palin. The central piece of art is a large painted work known as "The Temple of Fame" depicting a great number of philosophers and students. The McEwan Hall organ was built in 1897 by Robert Hope-Jones, and has been rebuilt and modified on various occasions afterwards.Another striking feature of the McEwan Hall is its large dome. On the inside of the dome is a biblical inscription: Wisdom is the principal thing, therefore get wisdom, and with all thy getting, get understanding. Exalt her and she shall bring thee to honour. (Proverbs 4:7).In 2015 the hall and Bristo Square closed for refurbishment and is due to reopen in time for the July 2017 graduations at a projected cost of £35 million. New heating, ventilation and lighting has been integrated with the Grade A listed interior and new seminar rooms created in the basement and below Bristo Square. One of the project's key aims is to provide easy access to all areas, including the second floor gallery. The McEwan Hall will be used for graduations, lectures and public talks, some Edinburgh Festival events and organ recitals.

My recent visit to the Arts University of Edinburgh was a truly enriching experience. The lush greenery that envelops the campus, coupled with the castle-like architecture, created a picturesque setting that exuded creativity and inspiration. Exploring the campus's nooks and crannies led me to discover an amazing cafe where I found a perfect spot to reflect and engage with the artistic ambiance. The blend of nature, history, and artistic energy at the university left me invigorated and eager to delve deeper into the world of creativity. I look forward to the possibility of returning to this unique environment , sending my students to study here and perhaps collaborating with the talented individuals who call the Arts University of Edinburgh their creative home.
Just attended a graduation at the McEwen hall. An institution that stood the test of time. Assisting students to improve themselves with wisdom and experiences. Making the world a better place. Amazing and congratulations to each and every student that graced this space.
Univerity of Edinburgh is one of the top universities in the world. It is located at Old College, South Bridge, Edinburgh EH8 9YL, Scotland
Oh my school... Prestigious. Beautiful... A very beautiful place for learning.. Ranks one of the best in the world.. Studying here is a dream come true for me. The conducive learning environment, the Edinburgh tourist attract, everything beautiful.
This is a horrible university, they really do not care about their students. About the appalling student conditions at this university, you can actually find a lot of information just by Googling 'University of Edinburgh is bad.' However, I still plan to add my two cents here just to help more people avoid choosing this university.nnI once studied in the undergraduate program of Cognitive Science, which is a collaborative program between the School of Informatics and the Department of Linguistics and Psychology. Theoretically, I could choose any courses from both departments to form my undergraduate degree. Hence, I have experiences from both the School of Informatics and the School of PPLS. First, the problem with Edinburgh's School of Informatics is that they admit too many students and simply do not have the capacity to train so many. During my study period, from 2019 to 2023, there were over 400 undergraduates in informatics, and with master's students included, a higher-level course could reach up to 600 students. Professors do not have the capacity to spend time on so many students, meaning that by the time you complete your program, your professors might still not know you, which is no different from watching Coursera. If you're looking to apply for a Ph.D., the University of Edinburgh is terrible. Firstly, as I mentioned earlier, it is hard for professors to provide any strong letters of recommendation because they really don't care about or know you. Secondly, because the university has admitted too many students, there are no resources for undergraduates to engage in research, which is essential for applying to Ph.D. programs, especially in the U.S., which often require research experience and even published papers. But the University of Edinburgh does not provide any academic resources that a university should offer undergraduates. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the university's performance was nearly fraudulent. During the pandemic, the university simply showed us old previous recorded lectures recorded about ten years ago and did not offer any office hours. And the course materials are out dated, especially for cs. UoE still teach Symbolic AI course from the Minsky era like the tech needed in 1980s, OMGnnRegarding employment, since the University of Edinburgh admits too many students, the employment data is also very poor. Can the UK job market really absorb 400 Edinburgh CS graduates each year? That's a joke.nnThe Department of Linguistics and Psychology faces the same problems, where professors only care about their research, do not prepare for courses, seem to look down on their students, and even prohibit their students from participating in research projects.nnThe most ridiculous thing is that professors from the School of Informatics collaborate with study abroad agencies namely, ggu consulting in China to sell paid research opportunites to Chinese university students to guide Chinese students publish papers and make extra money, while neglecting their own undergraduates. I dare say this method of making extra money definitely violates the code of conduct. From the president, Peter Mathieson, to the professors, everyone in this university is irresponsible and fraudulent
