Story

THE PHILANTHROPIST
The Classic Hit Comedy
By CHRISTOPHER HAMPTON
In a new production directed by SIMON CALLOW
starring MATT BERRY, SIMON BIRD, LILY COLE, CHARLOTTE RITCHIE and TOM ROSENTHAL
“Intellectually stimulating, touchingly sympathetic and gloriously, gloriously funny”
Sunday Times
Christopher Hampton’s most celebrated play has been delighting audiences and since its premiere at the Royal Court in 1970. A biting ‘bourgeois comedy’ and a fiendishly clever inversion of Moliere’s ‘The Misanthrope’, Simon Callow’s new production boasts some of today’s most exciting young stage and screen actors.
Out in the ‘real world’ the Prime Minister and his cabinet have been assassinated and England's most treasured writers are being murdered one by one! Back in the cosy bubble of university life, a bachelor don anguishes over sex, marriage, anagrams and the meaning of life. Did someone suggest academics were ‘out of touch’?
“Christopher Hampton's finest play"
Evening Standard
Christopher Hampton’s other works for the stage include Les Liaisons Dangereuses (recently revived to great acclaim) and Treats. He has also recently received significant acclaim for his translations of the award-winning smash hit The Father (“translated with venomous flare”) as well as The Mother and The Truth. The Old Vic has also just presented a major re-staging of his translation of Art. Among Christopher’s many screen adaptations are Les Liaisons Dangereuses and Atonement for which he received an Oscar® and an Oscar® nomination respectively.
Simon Callow has directed over thirty shows, including the multi award-winning musical Carmen Jones, the West End and Broadway productions of Shirley Valentine and the award-winning Single Spies by Alan Bennett at the National Theatre and in the West End.
This exciting ensemble cast includes BAFTA award winning writer, actor and musician MATT BERRY (The IT Crowd, The Mighty Boosh), SIMON BIRD (star of The Inbetweeners and Friday Night Dinner), model and actress LILY COLE, CHARLOTTE RITCHIE (Fresh Meat, Call the Midwife, Siblings) and TOM ROSENTHAL (Friday Night Dinner).

A lovely evening watching this production! It is one of the smaller theatres but just as good! We sat quite high up but you could still see the actors. Plenty of leg room and comfy seats! The drinks were quite expensive; £10 for a large glass of red wine.
Went to see an opera in studio 2. Incredible space, loved the seating surrounding the stage in all 4 sides. Makes the shows totally immersive. I was lucky enough to be in the front row and ended up interacting with the performers! Lovely venue and a great selection of shows.
I'd never been here before but it was a delightful experience I actually felt a part of because of the cosy space. We were in Studio 2 and really enjoyed being so close to the actors. I'll be keeping my eye out for other performances here.
Saw Dark Sublime and really enjoyed it. The intimacy of Studio 2 really adds to the enjoyment.
Lovely theatre. We were in Studio 1. Nice size, loads of leg room and really nice bar area. Staff very friendly and helpful and prices not bad. The performance of A Taste of Honey was excellent.
