Here at Toby Carvery Bruntcliffe, we believe there's only one way to do our beloved British roast – and that's properly.

Story

When it comes to roast dinners, we really know our stuff. Every day our chefs lay on a feast of tender, hand-carved meats with all the trimmings – including towering Yorkshire puds, golden roasties with all those lovely little crunchy bits, and plenty of freshly prepared veg, all crowned with proper gravy. So it's no wonder we're Leeds's favourite carvery restaurant.

Can't go wrong with a carvery. Even when it's busy the staff are friendly and helpful. Good for kids. The prices are good and there are colouring/activity sheets for the children to do too. So all in all a good meal out.

We booked a table online but on arrival we were told that the queue at the carvery was too big and were advised to wait at the bar. On ordering two glasses of cola we were told that we had to have the refillable Pepsi and were directed to the SELF-SERVICE machine(not service at all). I ordered a pint of real ale which was poured carefully so as not to spill over the edge of the glass but this was flat after two minutes and was exchanged. We had to queue for about five minutes at the carvery but it was worthwhile as the food was good. Overall this was a three star experience but if the staff and management had higher standards it could have been a four or five star rating.

Staff and manager where very polite and helpful. The food on the other hand was not so great. The serving area was filthy. Looked like it had not been cleaned for a while. Very dusty and there was bits of food and grease everywhere. The man who was serving I don't think had done a basic food and hygiene course as he kept wiping his hands on his dirty apron between serving. And the touching the food. And on top of that it was cold. I would of complained but I would just of got more cold food. Not a great experience overall. Shame as I went to another of the chain the other week and the food was hot and the area clean.

Oh dear, how things change over time ! 4 visits ago the chicken was cooked (destroyed) so badly I could not cut it even the knife was made to cut meat - could not even get the fork to penetrate the chicken. 3 visits ago the waitress went on a break and "forgot to special order the chicken breast. 2 visits ago it took so long for the chicken breast to appear, the other three in my party had finished their meals before I had even got mine. On my last visit the "software" did not transmit my chicken order to the kitchen, after 45 minutes of waiting they admitted this when asked what took so long. The end result we went to another fine place to eat in Wakefield. Service -1 out of 10. Quality 2 out of 10 Passing the customer off 11 out of 10 Customer service 0 out of 10 Even emails to Toby don't get answered. Only eat here, if you have nowhere else to go to on earth. Definitely do not order chicken. Be prepared to be lied to. Be prepared to ignored.. Brian.

An excellent meal at a very reasonable price. The young lady who served us was really friendly and couldn't do enough for us to make our visit pleasant. All the staff were just as accommodating. Thank you.
