Relatively pain free process - took a while when collecting the car, so allow time for that. Car was fine, no complaints there. Altering collection time did cost a fair amount of money, so make sure to check that too.
Thrifty was the company allocated to me as a curtesy car through 3rd party insurance due to a road accident that wasn’t my fault. The man who dropped it off was speedy but pleasant. He did explain the vehicle to me, pointed out any major flaws but didn’t give me time to inspect which would have been difficult as the car was covered in mud when it arrived which I was told was from the salted roads on the way to me. I accepted this as the man was friendly but was a little disappointed at how dirty it looked. I received a text unexpectedly for pick up saying a driver was on his way when no one had contacted me for pick up. I wouldn’t even have had a chance to contact insurance if I needed it longer and it was lucky I had filled it with fuel the night before. I contacted Thrifty who text me the Glasgow number to call. The woman on the phone was understanding and confirmed I didn’t need to be present as long as someone was there with the keys. I had work to get to and a pick up had not been confirmed or scheduled with me so it was lucky someone came. It was also lucky I didn’t wait for anyone to arrive as another text came at 4:30pm about 5 hours later to again say a driver was on route. When the drivers arrived they scrutinised every inch of the vehicle that was now clean by the way, and when my dad went out with the keys they were harsh and rude insisting on a “chip” that had likely been hidden by the dirt originally and wasn’t big enough to make any mark on the arrival diagram. I also haven’t driven the car far while having it. I felt like I was the driver who had caused a crash and was being judged with my driving the rental car - I’ve driven a lot of rental cars in other countries before and I am comfortable with different cars - but I was actually hit by debris when another car in front swerved and crashed unexpectedly. I don’t appreciate being a named woman on the car and treated like I must cause marks on a car, however, this generally sounds like an issue with Thrifty who try find flaws to charge customers. I would not recommend nor use this company of my own accord if I needed to rent a car in the future. I’ve always used Alamo abroad and would use them or find someone similar even if the cost was higher for a more truthful experience.
Booked an economy car Ford Fiesta for a 9 day Highlands trip with Thrifty for four main reasons: 1. City Centre pickup location 2. Best price available 3. 'Unlimited' mileage and 4. The terms & conditions were transparent. I was given a 2019 Ford Fiesta, in immaculate condition and with only 1000 miles already on it. It drove brilliantly. It had automatic tranmission: although I expected manual, this was not an issue for me. The staff were helpful and, pleasingly, were not pushy about hard-selling extras such as collision damage waiver insurance I already had my own. Had no problems when returning the car: staff were quick in checking it and assured me the deposit is usually returned within 3 working days but can take up to 10. I had a very positive experience and would use them again.
decent car, decent price so why only one star you may ask? Well I decided to forgo the pricey full insurance coverage that’s how all these rentals make their money that required me to put a £500 deposit on my credit card in case of damage. No worries.... I have been down this road many times. The charge is not processed, it is only a temporary hold on the card and taken off once the car is returned. I should point out that this was on a Canadian visa card. It was not until I returned to Toronto and saw my credit card statement that I realized what had happened. The clerk had actually charged my card for the £500 deposit and then refunded me the monies when I returned the card. So what is the big deal? Well anyone who has traveled knows there are exchange rate fees. I was hit up with an exchange rate premium on both ends of the deposit transaction which resulted in me loosing more money for that transaction that what I paid for the actual car rental, which I paid in cash. So lesson learned. If you are renting with a foreign credit card make sure that when they say they are putting a hold on your card it is really only a hold.
Fantastic range of vehicles, but staff bend over backwards to find something wrong with returned cars, they continously try and get more money from loyal customers. The car I brought back had been washed and hoovered by me as it was spotless when I picked it up, so I wanted to return it the same way. The woman on reception took the keys and immediately went to the nearside rear wheel arch and said " what happened there" a tiny scratch that she obviously knew about when I hired the car. Had to pay £80 for a repair that I know will never be carried out. How many other loyal customers paid £80 for the exact same scratch. It is my opinion that the staff get paid a very handsome commission by charging customers for damage that was always there. Better off with Enterprise or Sixt.
Staff were lovely and professional. Efficient pick up and drop off. Even with the full insurance, i found the prices here very competitive. We also got an upgrade on our car to a bwm 5 series which drove live a dream. Got my deposit back within a day. All documents required and info about deposits etc were clearly stated on their website. Walked to the central train station without issue within 10-15mins. Thanks for a great experience thrifty!
Hi Thrifty, Last Thursday I rented a van from your Glasgow branch for a business trip to London. On the Friday during the 7 hour drive to get to London the van broke down just halfway through the trip. I called the Glasgow branch for assistance and all they did was give me the number for roadside assistance and after that didn't want to know that I had a problem. When the roadside assistance arrived he discovered that a foreign object / piece of metal debris had pierced the radiator of the van and it was now in no state to be driven anywhere. There is no radiator guard installed in the front of the vehicle - a Ford Connect van so how am I supposed to avoid something like this happening? He towed me to the nearest Thrifty branch Stoke where they switched us over to a different van and we were on our way. On returning the van to the Glasgow branch today they had no record of the break down or that I was bringing back a different van and on top of that informed me that I would be CHARGED to for the cost of the repair to the van I had initially hired for the cost of fixing the radiator!! I can't believe this! I am being charged for a mechanical brake down! Not an accident or any damage that I have caused to the vehicle. I am disputing this cost and I will never be hiring a vehicle from your company again. I will also not be recommending your business to anyone and will be advising anyone that I know who is hiring a vehicle in the future to avoid your company at all costs. Your customer service is a joke and the quality of service provided to me every time I have hired a vehicle from your company has sunk lower each time
I have been renting vehicles from many Companies, on a constant basis over the last 4 years. I started renting with Thrifty , over a year ago , and would not go anywhere else. Firstly from experience , they easily have the best range of cars . The customer service is outstanding and they have been highly accommodating. The branch Manager and his sales team are very good to deal with and very helpful. Every Car i have ever hired from Thrifty has been of very good spec. If i have ever been unhappy with any rental car i have always been given the option to swap vehicles. To any long term renter, these qualities are essential. For me , Thrifty Glasgow ticks all the boxes and more. I have seen comments from people , understandably upset at being refused a car , due to lack of documents . I've had this issue before with rental companies and learned to do my homework in advance before going to collect any rental car as each company has operates their own criteria.
The worst car hire experience ever. They should change the name from Thrifty to Thefty. We hired ford fiesta for four days with all the possible insurance available, tyre and glass included, and when we returned it they charged us 85 £ for a tiny scratch on the alloy wheel, that could have been there already, given how small it was, or could have been just painted over to hide it. At least it should be mentioned clearly that the alloy is not included in the insurance. The feeling we had is that they just try their best to find the smallest imperfection in the car to charge some extra money. Staff was not polite and they also confirmed that the reason why the alloy is not covered in the insurance policy is that it is very easy to get a small scratch on it so they can't provide insurance for that!! So just be careful and inspect the car properly!!!
Had an issue with them when they charged me for a scuff I was confident I didn't do. After a few emails they accepted on pay me back my entire deposit as a 'gesture of goodwill' and their policy to not to have unhappy customers. Don't take me wrong, I would accept a charge for any damage I do as it's part of the contract I signed off, but in that case I was pretty sure I didn't do the scuff and I understood I was charged for no reason. Now that is fixed It is fair to put a positive review from my side. Apart from that, everything went well staff, the car, etc.
