I really like Thirsk Market Place. It is always a vibrant, busy place and in my opinion a good selection of shops, pubs and cafes. Not forgetting the roads leading in to and away from the centre which are many and just as diverse as on the square.nParking is excellent free for one hour with added parking areas no more than a slow five minute walk away. I have found all the shops I have been in to be friendly and welcoming with smiles all round.nThirsk Market days are on Mondays and Saturdays loss of parking spaces which is to be expected which always adds another atmosphere to the already great vibes of the square.nWould highly recommend a visit and if you have time, a little walk just off the square.
We love Thirsk at every time of the year. We always make an effort to visit twice. Fantastic selection of independent shops. Lovely community. Brilliant market and awesome tourist information centre. So much to do. If I can say. Avoid race days!
Quite peaceful at 09.00. The usual amount of traffic for the time of day. Thank goodness the major roadworks appear to be completed till next time.nWe returned to the Thirsk area 3 years ago after living in Ireland for 26 years. The amount of roadworks has been almost constant with road closures/temporary traffic lights, etc, within 2 miles of the Market Square since our return. I forgot, Long Street is in the process of being resurfaced this week.
What a delightful place to visit!nWe hopped on a train from York and arrived at Thirsk station in about 17 minutes before a good stride into town.nIf you are planning on arriving by train just be aware that there are some formidable steps to climb upto the footbridge to leave and enter the station which is actually in a place called Carlton Miniott and then a good walk into the town centre.nThe town centre is lovely-the yarn bombers have decorated a lot of the bollards and everywhere is clean and tidy. There’s plenty of parking in the town centre 1st hour free and a really good range of shops, cafes and pubs.nOf course it is the place to visit if you love James Herriot All Creatures Great and Small but we gave the museum a miss in favour of exploring some of the walks around the town and riverside. Call to see the lovely staff in the Tourist Information and they will give you lots of information and a free map showing all the paths and main sites of interest. It’s definitely somewhere that I would be happy to revisit.
Lovely place plenty places to eat also plenty parking
