The White Hart

About

A Boutique Pub & Restaurant, with nine letting rooms, set in the historic Cotswold market town of Stow on the Wold.

Story

People come from all over the world to stay at The White Hart - and it's not hard to see why.

This is a pub that lives up to its marvellous setting. Stow is one of the most photogenic of the Cotswolds' beautiful little towns and even by local standards, The White Hart Hotel is as pretty as a picture.

It could also fill a whole chapter of a book on architecture. Parts of it date back to the 12th Century, it was a coaching inn from the 14th Century and there are two Tudor priest holes upstairs. The front of the building is relatively recent - merely Georgian!

There is a front bar which is popular with locals, a small side lounge which visitors find irresistible and a large back bar, which includes the oldest part of the building. The White Hart also boasts a small beer garden and a restaurant, in an extension built in Victorian times, which has an extensive menu catering for a wide range of tastes and pockets.

If you are intending to stay overnight, there are five rooms to choose from, but try to book early because this is always a popular hotel. It's the kind of place people regularly come back to.

Some come back hoping to meet The White Hart Hotel's non-paying guest, a friendly ghost whom the locals have nicknamed 'George'. He sometimes manifests as a vertical white light after closing time in the bar, but only rarely appears as a figure - and then apparently for a reason.

They say 'George' doesn't like change. The good news for George - and everybody else - is that there isn't much at The White Hart that anybody would want to change.

We really enjoyed our stay at the White Hart. The pub area is cozy with a wood fire, we spent a lovely evening relaxing with drinks. The bartender was very knowledgable about the wine she was serving, which was impressive. The dinner was delicious with an interesting variety of dishes - several types of burgers and hotdogs. Our room was comfortable and clean. Slight complaint: the nylon duvet cover had my girlfriend sweating, while I was freezing. In the morning breakfast was perfectly-cooked (although the service wasn't quite as enthusiastic or professional as the night before, but I suppose I'm not at my best at 9am either). All in all, I'd definitely stay again.

Olde world pub in the beautiful Cotswold town square. Friendly, efficient young staff. Fast service, food gorgeous - will certainly be back.

Found this To be excellence and beyond ones expectations in so many ways. Mark and Janine the owners come from a well-bred line of hotels and have spared no expense on this project. The damage they have cause is with staff. The women at breakfast all (except the tall thin woman) have zero service decorum and no desire to actually be at their jobs and it shows. The hotel has possibilities to cause me to recommend to all my listeners as soon as these issues of unfriendly staff are resolved. On a final note, I left behind a suitcase to be shipped back to the United States. - could not have had more genuine service and kindness through mark the owner. Stay tuned on this one. I will return and write again over the holidays.

Went here for a drink while staying in Stow for the weekend. Decent ambience but my wife ordered a liquer coffee and got charged an astounding £10 for it. Just not good enough when there are so many good alternative pubs in the town. Won't be going back
