Visited here this evening with a friend and was very disappointed with the service. Having moved to Drayton around 4 months ago, I have visited here on 4-5 ocassions for dinner. I have a Cocker Spaniel who unfortunately suffers from bad separation anxiety and consequently cannot be left at home alone long. It was nice to find a local pub that appeared to be dog friendly. Anyway, this evening we sat down for dinner in the same area as we had on every other ocassion. The dog was completely relaxed and was lying down under the table/asleep as per usual. He was extremely well behaved and always is when he is around people. Anyway, the owner (presumably?) came over and said ‘can you keep the dog under the table please, if I had known you had a dog I wouldn’t have let you in here!’. Taken aback, I asked the gentleman what he said. It is also worth pointing out the owner has even acknowledged the dog in the past. He repeated himself and walked away. I was very shocked by this as at no point previously had we ever had any friction felt towards the dog and the gentleman’s approach was far from justified. Having worked in customer service orientated positions all my life, he could have been far more diplomatic. When the barman walked over shortly afterwards, I question if the dog was an issue as we would quite happily have moved or even left if I felt this was the case. He insisted he was not a problem. It was clear however from my earlier encounter with his boss this was not the case and I felt very unwelcome. My friend also agreed and was equally taken aback. We finished our meal and drinks as quickly as possible and left; though had planned to stay for dessert and drinks as we had done on previous visits. The evening was totally ruined. I do completely understand if people don’t like dogs however all that is required is a clear policy that does not contradict itself. This evenings approach completely conflicted with my experience during previous visits and frankly the owner handled the situation extremely poorly. It is a real shame as the barman is very friendly and hospitable. I won’t however be returning.

Food was good, but a bit on the expensive side in comparison to other Wheatsheaf pubs, and the service was good with friendly staff.

Great food in a cosy and friendly old pub. There's a reliable 'normal' pub menu full of old favourites, plus an extensive specials board with lots of more exotic stuff - the garlic & chilli prawns were particularly good!
