Definitley an oddity. Tablecloths all covered in easy clean plastic, lots of ‘afternoon tea’ adverts outside but literally only served 2-4pm. No cakes on menu, more a standard British cafe menus chips, pies, basic roast dinners. Staff were certainly friendly. Was a bit pricey for what I had.
The website and expectations are much higher than actual unfortunately. The room setting is victorian styled and done quite well, bit it's looking a little tired and could do with a freshen up on the decor. Sorry to say, it's a little tatty with plastic doily styled table cover. The food was fresh, and the panini and baguette were tasty. The baked potatoes are large and good choice of fillings. Cup of coffee tasted 'old' from a premade pot, not fresh. Service was friendly and polite. Clientele aged 60 - 80 who seemed less fussy than me, and I'm in 50+
Lovely little restaurant. The place to go if you want a nice, quiet meal. The decor is a bit tired and could do with a spruce up, but there are some lovely original features. The service we received was excellent. We would definitely return.
The Victorian Cafe - very nicely decorated in a authentic Victorian style. Has a nice mix of people here and the customer service was excellent. Really enjoy having breakfast and lunch here whenever I get a chance too. The tuna baguette was delicious, with a portion of crisps and salad. Only thing - it’s overpriced. Other than that it’s good quality restaurant, it has good quality staff and the food is good quality too. Totally recommended. KJ.
Come for the 19 Century ambience, grab a cup of tea and tea cake and admire.
Paid for two Sunday dinners with all the trimmings and a glass of wine each. The meal was microwaved and looked like it was purchased from Iceland. One roast potato, a few carrots, gravy and slices of pork and a stuffing ball. It was edible, however it was not worth £10 each. The decor is outdated and shabby not chic. The toilets are a disgrace and in need of decoration. Avoid this place.
Groupon deal for Sunday Roast. As we're vegetarian, we were given the vegetable pie Filled with sweetcorn, broccoli, green beans, etc with gravy, carrots, peas and mashed potato. Also swapped the alcohol in the deal for a soft drink. Good simple food in an interesting setting. Afternoon tea looked tasty too.
This is a great little hideaway. The decor is as you'd expect for a Victorian tea room with pictures and decorations being from a different time. The menu is basic but tasty and well presented. Everything is served with a smile and the staff appear to get to know their regulars too which is such a nice touch in this day and age. It is based upstairs in the great western arcade which means it's central but away from the busy street outside. If what you are looking for is a nice simple lunch and a place to just sit and relax or read a book as i do here then this is the place for you. Lone diners are more than welcome and the staff will make you feel welcome.
Sadly now closed and converted into something else. Used to love getting the team at work breakfast every Friday morning pre lockdown The hash browns and brown toast was to die for! Sadly unable to compete against the modern eateries with their multi million pound backing and subsidies! Shame, as they were unique in a modern word of same old same old American rubbish taking / has taken over the UK market for the modern man/woman.
My dad and I went here for afternoon tea and it was lovely !!! Yes, the decor could do with a "spruce up " but, the staff, particularly the blonde lady, were so friendly and helpful . I'm a redbush tea drinker but they didn't have it, so the blonde lady offered to go out and buy some !!!! Now THAT is excellent customer service !!!! Obviously I said no, and had a normal tea. Sandwiches so fresh, scones just perfect, cakes delicious. A perfect end to a great day out with my wonderful Dad
