Story

The University of Manchester was formed in 2004 by the amalgamation of the Victoria University of Manchester and the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology. It is a member of the worldwide Universities Research Association group, the Russell Group of British research universities and the N8 Group. The University of Manchester has been a "red brick university" since 1880 when Victoria University gained its royal charter.

The university owns and operates major cultural assets such as the Manchester Museum, Whitworth Art Gallery, John Rylands Library and Jodrell Bank Observatory. The University of Manchester has 25 Nobel Laureates among its past and present students and staff, the third-highest number of any single university in the United Kingdom after Cambridge and Oxford.

According to The Sunday Times, "Manchester has a formidable reputation spanning most disciplines, but most notably in the life sciences, engineering, humanities, economics, sociology and the social sciences". The 2013 Times Higher Education World Reputation Rankings have placed Manchester as the 9th most reputable university in Europe.

The best thing for being sad," replied Merlin, beginning to puff and blow, "is to learn something. That's the only thing that never fails. You may grow old and trembling in your anatomies, you may lie awake at night listening to the disorder of your veins, you may miss your only love, you may see the world about you devastated by evil lunatics, or know your honour trampled in the sewers of baser minds. There is only one thing for it then — to learn. Learn why the world wags and what wags it. That is the only thing which the mind can never exhaust, never alienate, never be tortured by, never fear or distrust, and never dream of regretting. Learning is the only thing for you. Look what a lot of things there are to learn.

I encourage all readers of this review to bear in mind that this experience was from 1974 when I finished university. I tried to add a review back then but there wasn't a google page available at the time. So, I always wanted to be a part of the students union during my studies but was never given the chance. I put my name in the hat for all three of the years I studied there. I used to think that the system was honest and fair and that the best candidates would get chance to add value to what was a cracking place to study. Absolutely fricking not, the panel is nothing but an old boy's club who vote in the man they think can drink a pint of pedigree the fastest out of their shoes. Now I'm sure they will insist things have changed since I studied there blah blah blah usual stuff. If you like pedigree then this is definitely for you, if not - get yourself over to Warwick!

One of the best universities. I've done two degrees here and loved every moment of it. They're extremely supportive and care about individual students. My lecturers always went the extra mile for us and made everything so enjoyable.

This review is in regard to ON CAMPUS ACCOMMODATION. BEWARE- If you are a potential student who is considering on campus accommodation. As an international Masters student, I have never been subjected to such rudeness, inconsideration, and disregard before and my feelings are shared by many of my colleagues. With a lack of communication and general disdain for students' well-being, the accommodation staff at the University of Manchester are the worst university staff I have ever encountered, and I work in higher education! Spotty wifi, barely maintained facilities, and substandard cleaning services as well as entire accommodations being forcibly evicted with poor communication and processes are only some of the nightmares I've encountered during my year here. Please DO NOT waste your money living on campus. I had to as a last resort and it has made me regret completing my Masters degree at the University of Manchester.

Staffs in University of Manchester can get the most basic copy and paste job wrong and give a lot of excuses when I asked them where my degree certificate was. I almost couldn’t get into my master programme because the staff who answered the call refused to answer any question after 15 minutes’ Coldplay ringtone (which cost me loads with the international call). She just kept saying that they got thousands of certificates to send and they couldn’t check whose certificates has been sent until the call was finally redirected to the staff who was responsible for graduation operations. And he said all the certificates had already been sent (Why did the staff who answered the phone in the first place give a completely different answer????). Turned out that they got both of my address and email address wrong - how incompetent can they be to put my email “gamil” instead of gmail? Isn’t it just a copy and paste job? Or do they not have autocorrect function in their system because my laptop just did it for me. The staff who answered the phone was not helpful at all. I feel I was punished for not paying for graduation ceremony and getting my degree certificate there. They treated me like I didn’t pay 18 grands of tuition fees per year.
