Well the food was absolutely lovely. I had a simple Korma. It was really nice and big well cooked chunks of chicken with more than enough sauce. The rice was well prepared and wholesome. In conclusion of first part of review, food was great and average priced. If any downside, and this is minor the lighting in the restaurant is a bit dark. Similar to what you may find in public toilets to stop druggies finding a vein.... SIMILAR but nothing like, there is a nice ambience in the big and clean room and nice big expensive looking photos. Guy serving was helpful and interested in where we had just come from. Will use again, definitely.
Last night of family gathering decided to eat out. Needn't have worried about not booking, the place was empty. No card facilities so had to run up the road to a cash machine, that was a bit off putting. The food was delicious, a little more spicy than in other places, but very good all the same. Would definitely go there again if ever in the area.
Very poor experience all round. The bloke who took our order was aloof and unfriendly. We came back after 30 mins and told to wait. He forgot to tell us it was ready so was getting cold. And the spicy fish dish was disgusting, poor fish lost its life to be cooked terribly. Told it would be saucy but it was just onions potatoes and fish cubes - no flavour at all. I’m very easy to please as well.
Despite the less than stellar food hygiene rating, I've never had a bad meal in the last 10 or so years. The restaurant itself had a lot less character than it did before the refurb, but the food makes up for it. Takeaways are consistently good.
If you find yourself in Machynlleth on a Saturday night and the first pub you go to isn't serving food, and the second pub you go to is fully booked, then DON'T make a decision to go to the Taj Mahal. - service was friendly but quite useless forgetting things, - food was poor. Meat was extremely chewy and the sauces weren't particularly tasty. Nan bread was ok - restaurant itself was particularly dirty. Carpets were filthy and the windowsill in the toilets was covered in dead flies. Most random Indian restaurants in the UK are of a decent quality but this place has slipped through the net. Avoid unless you are a fan of Delhi Belly.
What people have said below about the food. We went 02/08/19. The food was beautiful and tasty, it could do with a little revamp but the food is good. Great friendly staff who are more than happy to help. Highly recommend it if your passing or stopping in Machynlleth.
Have been coming regularly to the Taj Mahal, through out the year, both for takeaways and to eat in, for 8 years now. The food is always consistently good and tasty, and the service friendly and helpful. It’s our ‘local’ and We love it!
The main food was ok, the pershwer nans were very good. The carpet was black not red as it was meant to be, the mens toilets had mold on the ceiling and large numbers of dead flys. The service was ok until it came time to pay for the meal. They only accept cash which we were aware of by the sign as we arrived and all walked off to get cash. We finished the meal and then due to us all needing receipts to claim expenses, we asked for individual payment and receipts. This seemed an impossible mission for the staff and they got very rude and agressive saying we had to all pay as one and stop making things difficult. after stating our case they reluctantly did give us recipts but they were not itemised and half were incorrect. We had had enough by this point and decided not to argue further and left without a tip. Overall i would not recommend this establishment.
The food is always so tasty snd freash. The popadoms and pickle tray a firm favourite. Made us very welcome for my birthday and it's 14 guests. The host is great, what more do you need.
Have been going occasionally with friends for 16 years. Lovely curries always and no problems ever. NB. Remember to get cash out as they do not accept cards.
