About

Hennighan's Top Shop was established in 1982 and has been a running business since. Hennighan's Top Shop is a small corner shop located in Machynlleth Mid Wales.

Story

My parents started Hennighan's Top Shop in June 1982 by converting an old corner shop into a chip shop.
I managed the business until their retirement in 1998, at which point I took over ownership. The shop was completely refurbished throughout, with brand new state-of-the-art stainless steel kitchen fittings and our own personal style of decor.
Since this time we have won several awards, business has been excellent and we are now in the UK’S top 10 chip shops.
After 31 years in the job I still have the enthusiasm now that I had when we first started, and I hope that my own children share the same desire.
My wife and I are both heavily involved in the business with Eleanor doing the lunchtime shift and myself the night shift and the preparation in the morning.

I've heard good things about this place for a long time. On the outside it doesn't look fancy but on the inside its really tidy. Good clean tasty food and reasonably priced. It was the first time I've use this chip shop. It's a shame I live two hours away as the curry sauce it to die for. The best chip shop curry sauce I've had in my life. Easily! I do pass through Machynlleth now and again so I'll 100% call in.
Tried this chip shop last week, when on holiday. It's the nicest fish and chips I've eaten in a very long time ! Not greasy at all and the fish was cooked fresh while we waited. I would definitely recommend it !Recommended dishesFish and Chips
Really good, high-quality fish which was sizeable and worth the price. The chips were good even after the drive back to my accommodation where I ate my meal - if you have a car with heated seats I’d recommend using them to keep it hot! I ordered online and then collected from the shop. Was ignored when I entered the shop despite standing at the collection point and trying to get the attention of the staff - then when someone did talk to me my order had been sat on the counter all along! Not the best.
We asked to do our daughters birthday party here for her and a few friends and they was more than accommodating, they dressed the table and done helium balloons. Also next door is studio 13 , their ice cream and pudding shop , we was able to pre order cupcakes for after dinner and they were beautifully made and delicious. The staff are all very friendly and nothing was too much trouble. The food itself was great , fish was beautiful. Kid-friendliness: They welcomed all the party children and made the birthday girl feel very special
Another choice for gluten-free, and they were delicious! The family had a selection of items from the menu, and they were really happy with their meals, and as said, the gluten-free fish and chips were delicious. We'll definitely be calling in again on our way past! Dietary restrictions: Gluten-free fish and chips with gluten-free vinegar available. All cooked in a separate area and prepared freshly!
Absolutely superb haddock and chips, cooked fresh to order. Generous portions, very friendly staff. Way better than any fish and chips you can get in Barmouth! Will return soon.Food: 5/5

Fish and chips were top quality. Friendly service. So glad we discovered it. There were no moans as we walked in dripping wet from a long day in the rain
Soggy greasy fish and chips...certainly didn't taste like cod that I ordered mushy and tasteless. 2nd time we have had from here not going to be a 3rd I'm afraid. Miserable staff who could even be bothered to acknowledge you more interested in doing their takeaway orders despite standing in front of them for 10 minutes and then asking who is next!!! No I'm not a tourist.
Very friendly, helpful staff and value for money. There was an organised ordering system, social distancing applied without being over the top. We've had: fish and chips, pea fritters and chips, 2 ice cold soft drinks and not forgetting the happy, welcoming staff £12.15! Delicious, would highly recommend.
