Story

The Steamer Inn stands in one of the finest waterside locations on the Isle of Wight. With panoramic views across the English Channel and a superb, safe, sandy beach just a pebble's throw away, you would be hard pressed to find a better base for a holiday on the Island.Shanklin has for many years held the sunshine record for the United Kingdom. The town and the quaint Old Village are within easy walking distance via the cliff lift.

The Steamer offers excellent accommodation with eight rooms, all en-suite, four having balconies overlooking the sea where you can watch the sun rise over Culver Down. Our kitchen has a growing reputation for excellent local "nammit", including the world renowned Ventnor Bay crab and lobster. We are a free house offering a selection of traditional ales, lagers, wines and spirits. Why not sample our wares in the spacious bar with its large collection of seafaring memorabilia, or relax on the terrace and watch the world go by.

I was visiting Shanklin to see family and we took the dog for a morning walk on the beach. After this we were walking along the promenade and decided to try the Steamer Inn for breakfast as they let dogs in if we sat outside. The food was great, even though it was a bit more than I'd usually pay for breakfast. We all had the Steamer breakfast which was lovely and the sausages especially were fab. The beautiful sea view made for a great meal.

Good service and food. Seafood chowder was gorgeous. Limited real ales but it was Sunday night and the ales we drunk were well kept. Only a couple of small things stopped this being a 4.

Super lunch. The prices were verging on gastro pub so was expecting small pretty portions. How wrong I was. The portions are huge. Ended up leaving very full of good quality pub food. The soup (pea & lemon) was the last portion left and had a strange bitter aftertaste so that didn't go down to well but otherwise more than satisfied.

Lovely setting. Nice staff. Everything else is a let down. Weren't told you had to go to bar to order so sat outside with two kids like a lemon waiting. Food is horrible mass produced pub fare. Honestly one of worst meals out I've ever had. Cheap heated up stuff. Once ordered was with me on what seemed seconds. Curry totally inedible and had to be returned. Insanely busy which I don't understand. Bit gutted
