Disappointing Dining Experience Despite Great Atmosphere I recently visited Alto by San Carlo, and while the ambiance is truly stunning, the overall experience was far from satisfying. The decor is beautiful, offering a nice view that perfectly complements the trendy, lively vibe of the place. It's definitely the kind of spot you'd want to go for drinks or to soak in the atmosphere. However, when it comes to the food, it was a huge letdown. Tasteless and nowhere near worth the high prices. My daughter, who’s a picky eater, didn’t get the meal she wanted, and after waiting so long, we decided not to fuss about it. Unfortunately, when I tried her dish afterward, it was terrible—overly greasy pasta that was downright inedible. While our waitress was friendly, there were a few issues with the orders, which only added to the frustration. For a place that charges premium prices, I expected much better quality food and service. Sadly, this is not a place to come if you're looking for a great meal. It’s fine for drinks and vibes, but I wouldn't recommend it for dining. Overall, a disappointing and overpriced experience.
Enjoyed the experience with family for lunch. All our dishes were tasty and the staff were friendly and helpful. We were very lucky as the sun was shining and it was lovely and hot. To access the rooftop, you need to take the lift on the ground floor I think it was by the Chanel counter with a sign on the lift and a staff member there.
Finding Alto by San Carlo is a challenge in itself. It took us nearly 15 minutes to locate the special lift in Selfridges that takes you to the top floor. Once we finally arrived, there was no one at the reception. We waited around for another 15 minutes before anyone assisted us. When we eventually ordered, the service continued to disappoint. Our drinks took 20 minutes to arrive, and the food service was poorly timed my friend's meal came out first, and mine took an additional 30 minutes. It’s frustrating when you're expecting to enjoy a meal together, but instead, one person is left waiting. To top it off, as I was finally eating, a server brought over a random plate of spaghetti, thinking it was part of our order. It was clear there was confusion amongst the staff. The view from the rooftop, which is supposed to be a highlight, was underwhelming as well, we could only see a wall, not Oxford Circus as expected. Overall, the experience was a major letdown. I would advise anyone planning to visit to be careful and manage their expectations.
We visited Alto in Selfridges for drinks and a bite to eat. Food was great and good quality, it is small plates, so don’t expect large portions. Cocktails were fabulous.. Really disappointed by the the service, we had not booked so was initially taken to some not very nice area at the far end of the restaurant, with an awful view and no atmosphere, we asked to be seated in the bar area of the main restaurant, as we had seen they clearly had free tables, we were then seated there. We had a number of different servers, lots of staff but not attentive at all, had to call staff over a number of times. When I asked for the bill to be split, the server huffed and was clearly annoyed I had asked for this. Fabulous food, shame about the service.
Absolutely stunning place worth visiting. It's full of lemons and southern Europe decorations. The atmosphere is nice and food is tasty. Loved pistachio tiramisu. Some portions are pretty small, but some are absolutely fine and enough. If you are a big eater you may not be satisfied. I still recommend booking a table!
Service was really good. The manager, all the waiters, everyone was lovely. The lamb dish was delicious. But everything else was alright, nothing special, nothing to get again. Portions, except pasta dishes, were tiny. Not worth the ££ since the flavour was average. The oyster was good.Food: 3/5
Lovely hidden away spot on top of Selfridges, nice view and really lovely on a sunny day. Good was tasty, follow the recommendations of the service staff, plates are designed more for sharing as tapas than one plate per person!Food: 5/5
offers an exceptional dining experience! The food is delicious and authentic, the service is top-notch, and the ambiance is perfect for a memorable meal. Highly recommend for anyone looking for great Italian cuisine in the heart of the city! Book your table in advance as it was fullFood: 5/5
What a great experience with a unique vibe and authentic italian food! My husband and I went there as a newly-wed treat and had a blast. It's a bit expensive and you need to book in advance but worth going once in awhile. This restaurant is a venise-style tapas so all dishes as medium size, allowing you to share with your friends/family. The staff was so friendly with us and did not mind answering all my husband's questions as he loves to learn more about italian cuisine. I recommend this place for big occasions :
The food is absolutely lovely, the setting is stunning and I’m glad I got there early as as lunch service busied up, the service slowed somewhat. I would describe the service as aloof and not massively friendly. Agree with the other reviewer, the tap water should have ice, it’s tepid. I thought it was reasonably priced and have already booked to go back as Ioved the food so much.
