The Lit and Phil

Story

The Literary and Philosophical Society of Newcastle upon Tyne is a historical library in Newcastle upon Tyne, England, and the largest independent library outside London. The library is still available for both lending and as a free reference library.FoundingFounded in 1793 as a "conversation club" by the Reverend William Turner and others – more than fifty years before the London Library – the annual subscription was originally one guinea. The Lit and Phil library contained works in French, Spanish, German and Latin; its contacts were international, and its members debated a wide range of issues, but religion and politics were prohibited. Women were first admitted to the library in 1804. In February 2011, actor and comedian Alexander Armstrong became President of the Lit & Phil. He launched their funding appeal at a special gala event. At the start of 2012, membership of the Library reached 2,000, the highest number since 1952.HistoryDuring the 19th and 20th centuries, the Lit & Phil was host to a long list of the intelligentsia of the era. Engineer and inventor George Stephenson showed his miner's lamp there, and in 1879, when Joseph Swan demonstrated his electric light bulbs, the Lit and Phil building became the first public building to be so illuminated.

This place is absolutely gorgeous and a complete hidden gem in Newcastle. I can and have spent hours in here! The tour round is incredibly interesting and it's a lovely space to spend some time, especially when waiting on your train!
Spent some time here before my train and if I move to Newcastle I am definitely going to be their member. Welcoming staff and good environment to nurture the spirit.
Beautiful library for members but anyone can visit for free. Tea and coffee and cookies available at select times.
Happened upon this place by chance, very nice subscription library. Have been to Newcastle many times, never seen the Lit and Phil. What a great place, lady was so welcoming and staff so friendly. Amazing selection of books and it was nice to be able to browse and even enjoy coffee which was available at a small cost. Such a lovely building and we were given so much information on the society. They sell some excellent notecards at a very reasonable cost and we were given a free bookmark each, much appreciated. Will return for a longer visit next time in Newcastle.
What an amazing place, really enjoyed the free guided tour, well worth a visit. The tour guide was very knowledgeable about the history of the building and the local area. Some great photos opportunities for tourists
This is such an amazing place. The second largest private library in England. All ages benefit from the library, too. The staff are very passionate about their work. Bookbinding is a good option to learn a new skill and, at the same time, give back something special by binding books once you spend time training there. You need to be a member to join this voluntary role.
This is the place to go to if you're looking for a "Harry Potter" type experience in Newcastle. Very atmospheric, characterful, historic and evocative! Located only 5 minutes walk at most from the Central Station, I highly recommend this place as a highlight of Newcastle.
blink and you could miss it but if you know it’s there, the doorway leads to such a gorgeous hidden gem The building is old full of history and the interiors are like stepping back in time, in the best possible way from the spiral staircase, reading rooms, leather chairs to the beautiful roofs. The space can be used for reading, researching and if you are a member there are various options available you can take out books. Depending on the day, if can be busier than others but generally there is space to sit and read. A great space to look around or enjoy for longer.
First time here absolutely amazing, and I could spend all day here. Highly recommend a visit
Only been here once but I am in love with this library already. The interior design is so classy and gorgeous. Can’t believe how massive amount of books they have there. They have two big rooms a small quite chamber on the second floor. They offer free coffee which is really nice of them. They also hold different types of events once in while. Looking forward to go back there for some events in the future.
