So whilst the show attended was admittedly a preview, there is an incredible amount of work to be done. The evening started out promising, and a decent level of suspense was apparent, however after about 10 minutes of being in the room it fell to pieces and became utterly shambolic - the focus from the attendees shifted to the rushed storyline that wasn't explained and very quickly glossed over, and seemed to come out of the blue and impossible to keep track of. That was shooed out the door never to be mentioned again after about 5 minutes. The puzzles that followed had their immersion broken quickly by parts of it that weren't meant to be there, and shoddy set designs that left us needing the assistance of the presumably malevolent ghost/murderer/victim/whatever they were meant to be again not clearly explained. When we were told there were technical issues prior to starting the event, we thought this was all immersion building, not literally technical difficulties that we should be telling them about! The next puzzle was intriguing, but interrupted halfway through assuming to be lack of time, and this is where the event became nothing but being taken to "scary" rooms laid out by the killer, although again the reasoning for these rooms or their purpose was never really given any explanation - it felt like a simple tour guide of room to room of a schlocky haunted house, with nothing to connect them other than "I am a killer and this is where I killed people" - no interaction or investigation that we could partake in, until being herded to the next room. Finally the whole thing ended very abruptly, with no conclusion, epilogue or real explanation or breakdown of what had actually happened, further compounded by the last 15 minutes of our 1hour 30 minute show being taken around empty warehouse units unrelated to the show itself as the guide got lost, leaving a further bitter taste in the mouth. I really wanted to like this, it feels like it has potential to be scary and entertaining. I understand from a preview aspect that there will of course be technical hitches, and that this is the purpose of a dry run and so on. However to charge £24 for the privilege with no real outcome or enjoyment from this, nor even a real opportunity to provide feedback, it felt very much like we were simply being taken through as fast as possible to get the next group in and out as well. I sincerely hope that the production improves and meets the potential that it could reach, however currently with the asking price of £45 a head from next week for the "full" show, there is a huge amount missing. Personally, I would like my money back.
Disappointing. This production has so much potential but it’s like they’ve not really thought it through properly. The concept is great but the story is fragmented and the guests who ‘die’ are left standing around with a bag on their heads whilst the remaining participants try and work stuff out. The puzzles and clues just aren’t straight forward enough and the scare factor is poor so I wouldn’t recommend this interactive experience unless there was significant improvement. It’s a shame because the production value is good and the actors were fun but the £40 ticket price is absolutely not worth it.
Saw this and thought it was really promising. Set is great, actors are giving great performances and there were even some jumpy moments. Immersive theatre can only be tested on an audience so I am not surprised by the reviews that were done at the beginning. I loved the sound and the chase at the end especially being blindfold. I believe that's all new stuff that developed in the last week. Keep going, do your press week and I look forward to taking advantage of the online discount code I found
Hugely disappointing, half baked and expensive experience. In summary, all of the points made in the comments section were true of our experience. Great actors, good set, lots of positive anticipation and then... nothing. No storyline, no sense and no conclusion, leaving you with a very real sense of 'is that it?' A shame, as so much potential, but I actually did leave with a sense of being ripped off. The fact that there is no opportunity to feedback in any shape, way or form is perhaps the most truly horrific part of the experience. It's as if they know that it's bad and have decided to just brave it out. Spooky.
Just did this with 3 friends. Originally booked discounted tickets for preview week but due to technical issues our booking was changed to today, 1 month later. Since then the reviews here did not inspire confidence. In the end it's a fun experience but a bit of a mixed bag. Definitely not scary, not even a bit so if you're looking for something terrifying you will be sorely disappointed. For the price we paid £25 each it was fine but if we had paid the full price £45 then it would have been a major disappointment. As other reviews said, it is very disjointed. Clues that you are given early on end up having no part to play at all, there's no real story to follow but the actors do their best to make it fun. I could not recommend it for the full price though.
I'm writing this on the train back, I read the reviews before I went, so I had quite low expectations, they were unfounded. Is this groundbreaking? Well, no. But its bloody good fun, all the actors deserve praise because they really made the experience. Now, as I 'died' I cannot comment on all the rooms, but I can heavily dispute that its just sitting in a room if that's your fate. It's a really fun and different group activity and I recommend it. Bring a group and a sense of humour and I think you'll enjoy it too. Also I want my bubblegum sloth sculpture!
So many different routes to this show. The aesthetic is really strong and creates a really satisfying level of immersion. The performances are absolutely fantastic across the board. It's really hard to tell who's a punter and who's an actor throughout the experience. The tasks/escape elements were really fun and satisfying. This is definitely a show that rewards hard working, explorative audiences. Definitely pay attention to the narrative throughout, it really helps with the tasks and overall satisfaction. Great for a group of friends. I actually went by myself and had a great time. The actors are really welcoming. I would recommend this to anyone who's into immersive/interactive/escape rooms. It covers all bases. The show is set up and executed so well that I think it would work really well for everyone, regardless of theatrical experience. Not sure how much longer it is running, but make sure you visit while it is. Really good fun.
I'd read the reviews here before visiting but not before buying my ticket so entered the Hollow Hotel with pretty low expectations. Overall some of the points made by other reviews are fair, but I left feeling happy with the experience. The Good: - The actors do a great job of building the tension before you enter your room, they very much commit to the story. - The setting is very well done, the hotel lobby and bar are great, as are the rooms. Some of the later rooms are also brilliantly done - however you may only see some of these if you 'die'. - The characters are actually well thought out with little bits of dialog thrown in to make you feel uncomfortable. The Bad: - Echoing the other reviews, the plot line isn't linear enough for you to grasp what's going on a lot of the time. Some rooms feel rushed and you're left wondering what you're supposed to be doing to escape. - The horror isn't dialed up enough, so you never really feel a sense of dread or the need to escape 'the killer' until the experience is almost over.
We went to the preview of this and unfortunately my feedback is aligned with the other reviews. It started off being quite promising, the set is really good. There just didn't seem to be any story. The whole thing seems to be confused as to whether it is an escape room or immersive theatre. There were clues that led to nowhere, challenges that meant nothing and actors which were actually just ushers directing us from one room to the next without any rhyme or reason. I hope that the first night was not a reflection of the rest of the run.
I went last night, In a small group, i didn't know what to expect. I thought it was engaging and the performances were good. My friend and I had a lot of fun discovering that it had an escape room element and as I was killed first was taken off for a one on one experience. I think it will continue to get better as with most Immersive shows!
