After searching for a restaurant in the Scottish Borders that serves local, fresh, quality ingredients and prepared to the highest standards exceeding my expectations, I have found it!!! We placed a booking for the Easter Sunday special menu and crossed our fingers, well, wow. Oh, on the reverse of the menu was a list of where and who grows, catches and rears each of the ingredients. I won't go into full detail of our order, but I will mention that my good lady had perfectly prepared Sea Bass, thick, tender and the lightest searing just giving a subtle tan. I had Lamb and plenty of it, a mix of medium thin full slices and smaller chunkier pieces with a hint of crispiness. The lamb was neither rare or well done but that perfect sweet spot. I can only praise the Chefs perfect timing and attention to both of these ingredients, it's nice to feel like the Chef has cooked YOUR food, rather than just being batch cooked with other customers. My review history will back up the fact that I only give super positive feedback where it is truly deserved and absolutely the opposite where it's not. I cannot comment on the rooms at this point, but with family and friends to occasionally visit, I will be politely asking for a room viewing. Nearby activities: Innerleithen is a must if you mountain bike, DON'T eat from the chip shop. Walkability: Innerleithen, St Mary's Lock, Ettrick Valley all good for scuffing those boots and pleasing the eyeballs. Food & drinks: Just stick with The Gordon Arms.
We had the 5 course tasting menu which was sensational. The wines were perfectly paired and blew us away. Highly recommend anyone travelling through that area to stop for the night and treat yourself. Thank you Bryn and Oxana for a truly memorable dining experience.Rooms: 5/5
We came here for dinner just before Christmas and had a really nice time. We were the only diners that evening as although the hotel was full, all the guest had gone to a wedding, so it was very quiet. We wanted a drink before dinner in the bar area, but unfortunately it was chilly, as the fire wasn’t on. I guess this was because we were the only diners. There was though a small fire on in the restaurant once we went through for dinner. The food was good and the service was excellent. We would definitely go again, although it was a little pricey to go regularly.
We popped in for a drink, and were immediately welcomed by the very charming owner. The restaurant and bar are beautiful - very clean and stylish, with fresh flowers everywhere. In fact, when the owner noticed me smelling the gorgeous sweet peas on our table, she very kindly invited me to pop into the garden and take some home! Although we weren't eating today, we had a look at the menu, which seemed very tempting - we'll definitely be back very soon to try it. Thank you for your kindness.
We stopped by for lunch in the bar on a quiet Friday and were made very welcome. We both had burgers one vegan, one beef and both were brilliant. The ingredients are clearly thoughtfully sourced locally and beautifully prepared. It was also very nice to get a local good quality alcohol free beer. A simple thing that makes all the difference. Although we 'just' had the burgers I think it is a mark of real quality when something simple is so well prepared. Hopefully we can come back sometime for the full experience.
First of al I want to say that the owners are super friendly, and they can read minds. They only use products from surrounding farmers, and you can taste it. I had a quiche and didn't want to stop eating ;- Also, the wine is first class. Really recommended to eat here. We stayed one night, and there is also nothing to say negative
Not local but pass this pub when we drive to Edinburgh. It’s changed hands in the last year and is now more restaurant-oriented. Nonetheless, had a delicious Sunday lunch in there, food was fantastic, great service and nice to see the owner/chef come out into the dining room to speak to customers after their meals, exactly what my father used to do years ago. Even our Labrador was made welcome! Thoroughly recommended.
Excellent dinner and lovely atmosphere. Log fire. We were well looked after and price was reasonable too. The Gordon Arms is a recommended visit for any lover of locally sourced produce like ourselves. We enjoyed roasted butternut squash and salmon for starters. Then local venison Wellington and mushroom risotto for main. Followed by armagnac prunes for dessert. Food was cooked to perfection. All so good!
Had lunch from their Coronation menu, two courses, main and dessert. Absolutely superb. We both had the lamb as our main dish, which just melted in the mouth. Can't recommend it more highly for quality and value for money. Parking: Ample and motorhome friendly
We've been visiting the Gordon Arms for over 30 years in its many guises. We visited it this August expecting it to be the same bar/restaurant it was over the last couple of years since it had been done up. It was such a lovely surprise to see that it is under new management no offense intended at all to the previous owners. Everything is done to such a high standard...from the high quality printed menus which change every week, the linen napkins and the subtle inoffensive background music. Our food was superb and all cooked to order. Another reviewer mentioned service was slow...it was no problem to wait for food cooked freshly and superbly. The Chef found time to come and chat with us after our meal. I wish the new owners all the success in the world as they bloody well deserve it after the effort they have put in.
