Delicious Sunday Roast with a choice of beef juicy and flavorful, lamb, pork belly, and vegan roast. Tried all 3 meats and all were delicious and juicy. The beef was my favourite . Yorkshire pudding was crispy on the rim but soft in the center, and goes well eith the gravy. Roasted vegetables went very well with the meat and really liked to caramelized onions. Good sauces, though the apple sauce was slightly sweet. Highly recommended for Sunday Roast!
Fancied a true craft Bristol ale after a Vegan breakfast with my daughter so she suggested one on the historic King Street watering holes and this was it. A step back in time to this famous cobbled street go-to drinking destination area. Lovely historical building and location and a proper real old world smell inside...real oak, wood, candles and burnt wood certainly adds to this pub's atmosphere and historical charm. The staff were ever so friendly, welcoming and attentive. The vast selection of real true cask ales and ciders is very impressive, wow! I had a pint of the 'UP ABOVE' session pale ale brewed by LHG /Left Handed Giant independent Brewery in Bristol and it was exceptionally good and stunning! A big thank you to all the staff for making my swift ale pitstop so memorable and enjoyable! Highly recommend this great historical pub and the food is apparently good too...definitely next time!
Lovely Sunday roast. I had the vegetarian option and it was delicious. Great selection of craft beers as well! Really worth the visit if you’re into good beer :
Interesting pub with a huge selection of beers in differing styles, a large beer board lists everything available. Good seating in the front bar area.
Always have great selection of beer on tap and good choice of wine too. Great for a cold winters day especially when they are serving up their Sunday roasts pork belly is thee best but equally a nice spot in the summer, with seating on Kings street and great bar snacks too! Staff generally quite chatty and friendly.
I brought my 7yo sister here for part of her first big girl sleepover. We ordered a Sunday roast and after mentioning to the bar staff a lovely ginger guy - didnt get his name that she is autistic and asking if they could space her food on the plate, they actually brought each component down on a tapas style dish, letting her try new foods without compromising the safe foods. One of the kitchen guys came down and spoke to her directly to check that she was happy. This was a wonderful gesture and she felt really seen. As a carer we run into these issues everytime we go out to eat, and although she didnt eat much, the effort they went through to give her the option to try things was great! She also said to say she has never seen a yorkshire pudding so big in her life! Personally i frequent this pub with friends/ dates and its a great environment! Fantastic options of beers/ ciders/ stouts. Big up the Navy Volunteer!
Decent old pub in the middle of the town. Sells a wide range of craft beers - all vegan or gluten free. A bit up itself at times and staff could do with a reminder that customers are not a nuisance.
Just had hour annual Christmas roast as usual here at the volley. Unfortunately seems to have gone quite downhill particularly in terms of service but the food was also average. We were a big group, which admittedly can be tricky to accommodate however we we felt they portrayed having to serve us was a huge chore. Is asking for an additional cauliflower cheese or whether custard is served with a crumble unusual at a Sunday roast? Despite booking in advance we were asked the just evening before to contact all of the group and preorder, which we did. The food arrived but none of us had any cutlery at took a good 5 minutes to arrive while all our food was sat there getting cold. Food was ok but nothing special. Was a smallish portion.. half a carrot and some sauces on the side. Meat tasted good but the whole meal was definitely better in previous years and the veg option was not as my friend who ordered it expected at all. Beer and wine were nice. Dirty plates were sat there well after food was finished and dessert had been ordered and brought to the table. We had to move the dirty plates to the table next to us for space for the dessert. Despite all of the above we had still had a good night with pleasant company until the end when we asked for the bill, which they said they’d bring over. 15minutes passed and nothing arrived and the place was not busy in any stretch of the imagination. We went up to the bar and the staff were just chatting anyway. Requested the bill again politely and the barmaid who looked visibly irritated informed us that it would be brought to the table. Then the male barman looked at us and said with a sarcastic manner, ‘nice’. With a roll of the eyes… unsure of exactly we were supposed to have done wrong at this point potentially it was annoying having to serve a big group of people?… surely this is part of the job particularly at Christmas time? I stress we were nothing but polite and courteous the whole time, just trying to have a pleasant meal with friends we’d not seen in ages. We asked if we had done something wrong to warrant their reaction which we explained after he asked what reaction. He immediately responded very defensively said we were trying to ‘gaslight’ him. I’ve honestly never experienced such an unusual response from someone who is meant to be working in hospitality. Bar staff who appear visibly hostile to who had been returning friendly paying customers. If there had been something we were missing he could have explained in a polite way or even not… having worked in hospitality myself you are there to provide a good experience particularly to normal courteous customers!. We will not be returning for next years meal or any time in between.
Lovely place to chill out with friends. Warm, cosy vibe. We just drank here and the prices were very reasonable. They had a room reserved for people participating in a quiz, so might try that next time I visit.
Sunday roast dinner. All very good and plentiful. Good selection of ciders and beers. Dessert was good, but not up to the standard of the main course.
