The Elephant House
Gourmet Tea & Coffee House and Restaurant

Opened in 1995, The Elephant House has established itself as one of the best tea and coffee houses in Edinburgh. Made famous as the place of inspiration to writers such as J.K. Rowling, who sat writing much of her early novels in the back room overlooking Edinburgh Castle.

Ian Rankin, author of the bestselling Rebus novels, and Alexander McCall-Smith, author of The No.1 Ladies' Detective Agency and other series of novels, have also frequented The Elephant House, as well as many others throughout the years.

Experience the magic yourself. Visit us and savour a cup of tea or coffee before venturing out to explore historic Edinburgh.

The staff was nice enough to help me choose a cake but I didn't like the Peaches and Cream cake that I ended up with. I might have expected more about their food which is not that bad but not really excellent either. I like the place though, bright and cozy just as I expected cafes to be.
Fantastic Scottish breakfast and great staff! Coffee is great too! Not to mention the birthplace of Harry Potter!
This is where J. K. Rowling wrote the Harry Potter books. If it is good enough for her then it is good enough for me.
Lovely cafe. Good food, delightful service, great views and cosy ambience. Harry Potter fans will be delighted to visit the bathroom!
Really wide selection of food and drinks, which is amazing. Overall nice experience with nice staff. The only thing we would appreciate would be maybe slightly bigger portions.
