I hope we all love small independent local bookshops. So few of them now, and they surely deserve to be preserved at all costs... bastions often of warmth and comfort, always of individuality, and usually committed to ensuring local reference and literary works are offered alongside international literature. Sometimes they manage to really surprise... I once filled my entire Christmas gift list in a single visit to a quirky little bookseller in Kenilworth... every one a real surprise not just to its recipient, but also to me - almost restoring my faith in middle England. Almost. I have passed the Edinburgh Bookshop over the past couple of years, driving in and out of Edinburgh, but finally last week I made time to visit... and it's a delightful gem. A refuge from the bustle of Edinburgh traffic outside of course, but more than that a retreat for its local community... reflected on the shelves and in the cozy comfort of the opportunity to browse and to sit and read. Murmuring hush and true personality combine to provide a great local welcome and access to a haven for however long you have, with the option to carry away with you some treat of knowledge or literature to feast your senses later, at home. Please do. Bookshops depend for their survival on us actually buying. I picked out three books on this occasion, including a local author naturally, was charmed by the friendly service, and loved that feeling of sensory joy to come as I made my way home. Do go, and bring away your own prize. A smashing place well worth an hour of your life - repeatedly.

The only bookshop where I buy book physically. It's just around the corner. Sometimes I bring my friend's child to the storytelling. It was excellent. The price is nowhere cheap (student here) but they have an excellent sélection.
