Steve and Alison
Pubs and ales are what Steve does best – and he has a long history of running successful pubs, including, amongst others, The Old Coach House in Southwell where he reached the final of the National Pub of the Year. More recently, with his partner Alison, he ran The Hearty Goodfellow in Southwell, where they were awarded the Newark Pub of the Year.
Steve, you could say, is steeped in beer. In addition to his role as landlord at The Cross Keys Upton, he is chief brewer at Mallard Brewery, located at nearby Maythorne and is responsible for the creation and production of a range of ‘Quacking Good Ales’, many of which can be sampled at the ‘Cross Keys’.
Both Steve and Alison have a strong passion for pub life, offering a warm welcome, sharing their love of home cooked food along with locally brewed ales making them the perfect hosts.
Fine Ales
The Cross Keys Upton is closely associated with Mallard Brewery, a microbrewery located at nearby Maythorne (The Cross Keys Upton Landlord Steve Hussey is also the Chief Brewer).
Mallard produces a range of fine, traditionally brewed ales ranging from classic bitters through pale and golden ales to stouts.
Interestingly, a beer festival organised at the Cross Keys in the 1990s provided the debut for Mallard beers when the brewery was first started.
Now some 20 + years later, with both the brewery and pub under the management of Steve and Alison, the Cross Keys Upton has become the principal tap for Mallard Ales. So a wide selection to our beer drinkers, who can enjoy a fine selection of craft-brewed cask ales, which revel in names such as ‘Duck n Dive’, ‘Quackerjack’ and ‘Spitting Feathers’. Just look for the distinctive pump clips to see what’s on offer.
Of course, the Mallard ales are complemented by a wide range of others beers and a good selection of fine wines – so whatever your tipple, The Cross Keys Upton has the answer.
