Scott and Lauren were warm and welcoming and the pub has a new menu. Food was excellent and choice was much improved. I had the Scallops to start and a lovely red wine and fennel sausages. They have really gone out of the way for dogs which is great I’ll definitely be bringing mine next time. Place looks very smart inside much better than before. A clear day so great views over to the IOW
I attended a wedding reception here on Valentines Day 14 February 2024 and had a memorable time enjoying the facilities and food. Nothing was too much trouble for the staff - they were all very helpful and worked hard to make sure the 50+ lunch guests and the further number of evening guests were happy and responded to requests efficiently, speedily, and with a smile. Thank you April, Tia, Jack, Keiron and Emillee! The reception was held in an upstairs room, but the rest of the pub is worthy of a mention - the furnishings were cosy and welcoming - and the views from the pub's position on the hill above Portsmouth is outstanding. My favourite 'find' was a section for dogs - yes all things doggy were available on their own menu - drinks and snacks! See the photos.
We had an awful experience here tonight. We pre booked our table for 18.15 for 5 people. When we arrived we were shown to our table and shown the menus. We went and ordered drinks first then about 10 mins later went to the bar to order food. It was at this point for the first time we were informed the pub was only able to serve about 1/5 of the main meals on its menu. So 4 of the 5 of us changed our choices, as we already had drinks so decided we might as well stay. In the long wait for the food we discovered on talking to other customers and watching what was going on that there was a private function upstairs for 90 guests. Hence why they couldn’t cater for the pub guests as well. The table behind us had also reserved their table and they were not told at any point about the drastically reduced menu, I did at the point I heard them saying what they wanted. Another reserved table of 8 were told it would be 45 to even get some nachos so they left. When our food did eventually come out all the meals felt like they have been rushed, or left under a heat lamp. my husbands sweet potato fries had been cremated which we had to point out to the waitress and ask for new ones, not sure how the chef was happy they left the kitchen. So all in all a disappointment all round. We really had to push for a discount off the food bill which was begrudgingly given as apparently they ‘did say sorry’ Whilst waiting for a while after we had eaten to find out what discount they would offer us no one cleared the table and I saw another customer taking their empty plates up to the bar. Will not be going back for food any time soon I hope the 90 pre paid meals makes up for your damaged reputation from all the guests who will share about their awful experiences tonight.
Fab starters but the fish and chips main tasted like it had been cooked with the starter and left standing until we were ready. Cutlery arrived after the food rather than before which is tiny thing but helps make 4 stars for good rather than 5 stars great. Awesome views and really friendly staff.
We visited for lunch. One couple ordered at the bar and the other ordered online via the App. A lovely lady came over and asked if we wanted our food served at the same time. Such a nice touch. Food was delicious and served so quickly. Toilets were spotlessly clean. Decor in pub was very tasteful and we felt so 'at home'. Thank you so much. We will visit again x
Loved this place, vibe was muted and relaxed. Staff were busy but very helpful. The dog menu was genius makes me wish i has a dog now I had the beetroot pasta and my partner had the fish and chips huge portion Vegetarian options: Loads of options that aren't drenched in cheese! Parking: Great views over portsmouth. Ideal for a long walk too.
Great little pub with some cracking views. The pies are lovely and the plated roast are equally good. Good selection of beers and really attentive staff! Took care of a table of 8 with ease. Will go again and would recommend.Food: 4/5
The Churchillian is in a superb location and we were shown to a table with a great view over Portsmouth. After that it became disappointing. I have rarely been to a restaurant in recent years where customers order and pay at the bar. I sought pen and paper and took the drinks and food order, dutifully queued at the bar and of course some items were not available, so back to our table to seek a variation. Two of our orders were intended to come from the 2 or 3 course menu. I explained that and paid. No receipt was offered. I checked what I paid and it did not tally with two meals from the 2 course, it was based on the main menu so cheaper but no dessert included. We didn't bother with desserts or coffee. A large party was being served in the function room so service was not too speedy. Such a shame.
The service was 5 stars for friendliness, but we had to wait a long time for dessert, since the place was very busy. The place is very popular and has great views over Portsmouth harbour and Langston harbour. I had a salad with chicken and bacon which was excellent as was the real ale.Food: 5/5
Absolutely dire. The queue at the bar was ridiculous, no urgency from bar staff. The service in the kitchen could have been no better as we waited 45 minutes for food. The service in the dining room also had no urgency, having to ask for salt, this should be basic stuff for a food establishment. Ordered fish and chips... Well there wasn't even a mouthful of fish in the burnt tasting batter I was served, the mushy peas portion was an embarrassment and my bread was 1 missing butter and 2 been sat under heat lamps so long it was now toast. When a man claiming to be a regular 3 time a week customer asked where his food was as it had been half an hour the server was frankly rude, starting she had not been to check since he last asked as she was busy clearing tables. Instead of clearing tables from customers who had left, she should have been looking after the ones still seated. Another table pre-ordered Christmas dinner and when the server was asked about a refund she told them she didn't deal with refunds and they'd have to see a manager but none appeared even half an hour later. I won't be back and I'll be telling everyone I know to stay away. You'd be 100% better off getting Mick's and eating it in your car
