Story

The Charterhouse has been living the nation’s history since 1348. Founded as a medieval monastery of the Carthusian order, the site became a Tudor mansion, a boys’ school, and an almshouse, which it remains to this day. We provide accommodation for over 40 individuals known as ‘Brothers’ who form part of the community alongside staff, private and commercial tenants, and residents of the Infirmary.

Our historic and peaceful 7 acre site is an inspiring location for filming and private events. In late January 2017 we opened our doors to the public for the first time in our 660 year history as part of the Revealing the Charterhouse project.

Come and discover our fascinating story revealed through our new museum and learning programme; explore the site during a paid tour; and relax with tea and homemade cake in our café. We look forward to welcoming you.

Cool monastery nestled away near Barbican! Found this spot during a brief afternoon stroll and really enjoyed learning about this place. Great for a brief historical experience without a huge time commitment!Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo wait
Incredibly interesting place steeped in history. Entry is free but limited to just a small part, so do book a guided tour to get the most from your visit. I have included the Charterhouse' in one of my Youtube videos and Tiktok - please search 'The Wanderlust Way' to see this
Found a hidden gem in the city center accidentally. The Charterhouse is a 14th century monastery turned into school, chapel, and almshouse. It has a small but beautiful garden, a history museum and a chapel open to public visit.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedYes
Joanna, our exceptional tour guide, wove together humour, rich details, and historical facts during our delightful exploration of the Charterhouse. This hidden gem left us utterly enchanted.Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedYes
I’d highly recommend doing the Tour on the basis that I didn’t and it must be good compared to what I saw. Entry is free to the museum and church. Lovely, except it’s a waste of time. Someone, please put your hand up and admit responsibility decided to lay out the museum in reverse chronological order. I’m usually a fan of a contrarian approach and creative thinking but this isn’t really creative. It’s just stupid. History can’t just whimsically be understood in reverse. The narrative is pretty linear in one direction. If we’re to overlook this glaringly, monumentally ridiculous error, the museum still isn’t particularly interesting. It’s small and with pretty meagre descriptive displays. I basically understand the rough outline of the place now but the transitions from one period to another make very little sense. The church is small but nice. You’ll be done within 30 minutes. Do the tour. Maybe the museum was so badly curated to force you to do the tour but in any case just do the tour and don’t waste your time with the museum.
Fascinating history of a group of buildings which have been a monastery, mansion, school famous past pupils include scouts founder Robert Baden-Powell, writer William Thackery and theologian John Wesley and is still an alms house. Small museum and chapel open to all, need to go on a tour to see other parts of the complex. Two tours a day: 11 and 2.15. We tried to buy tickets before on two different devices with two different people with no success but there were tickets available when we turned up.
The museum and chapel are free to visit and well worth some of your time. You might even be lucky enough to get a tour with Judith, one of the sweetest and informed guides we've ever met.Visited onWeekday
The tour of this place is absolutely fascinating! You MUST do the tour, it is worth every penny and more! I have been visiting London on a regular basis for years and cannot believe I had never heard of this place. The history that has happened here! I would absolutely put Charterhouse on your must see list, not just for the history, but for the good that it continues to do today.
The hour long tour was excellent! You only go through about 5 rooms plus the courtyards, but our guide was excellent in giving its very unique history, people and current use in an engaging and occasionally humourous way - going through its initial inception as a burial ground, to the monastery, demolition then manor house building post-Henry VIII, and later turning it into an almshouse for the poor and school for promising boys and still used for the elderly. Make sure to prebook especially if the weekend as we saw a few people were turned away at the desk because of space. There is also a small museum and chapel that gave details on the history, key people, way of life, etc. For facilities: there are two single toilets at the front in the reception/gift shop area.
This was such a highlight of our trip to London. The garden in front along with the breathtaking chapel and dedication to this place are absolutely worth the visit. The museum and chapel were all free you can donate if you desire, and they had guided tours going where you can see the entire layout.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
