Upon arrival the Hotel was impressive. Checking in was straight forward, although I was surprised by the £50 deposit taken out of my account which I was told would be refunded within 7 to 10 days. The Rooms are clean and good size. The facilities in the hotel are good especially the swimming pool area which I'm pleased to see is cleaned every evening. The staff are friendly and helpful. However, there were times I was dumfounded by the lack of hospitality and professionalism of some staff especially around dinner service. This could have something to do with being understaffed maybe, but when you are charging high prices for drinks and food then expectations are considerably higher. The Golf courses are amazing with some spectacular views and you won't be disappointed with any of them. I am really impressed with the shuttle buses from the hotel to the different courses and the drivers were always helpful and had a great sense of humour. Would I recommend this hotel to others? I certainly would. I think with a few team building sessions/ refresher courses this hotel could be 5*
Very nice stay at the Celtic Manor in Newport Gwent. The service and the room were very good. The breakfasts, that were a buffet style are great, you can always go back for a bit more if you feel you are still hungry. I stayed in the old part of the hotel at the Manor House, the room was warm and comfortable, the amenities also were very good. The staff are very friendly and helpful, always a smile and fast with the right information. The gym I used daily and was very clean and well maintained, also they have some staff available most of the time in the gym. Overall it was a good stay and would recommend it highly.
There are so many good things here but really undercut by the negatives. Biggest negative was the fire alarm going off twice in the middle of the night. I know these things happen but the communication both during and after the alarm felt terrible. - We were surprised to find we had to pay for parking on top of our not cheap room rate, and it means you are rather trapped as if you take your car out and back again you have to pay the parking rate again. - The rooms were comfortable but there were no plug sockets anywhere near the bed, so the lamps there were completely useless - just a trailing cable to nothing. - swimming pool was lovely and warm and the kids loved it, but all 3 toilets in the changing room were out of order for our whole stay, so when my daughter needed the toilet we had to end our swim early, and you only get 2 time limited slots with your stay so that was it. - all the staff we met were lovely, but the phones are awful, impossible to get through to someone and if you do manage it they immediately transfer you on to a number that either rings forever or goes back to the beginning of the menu. - the buffet dinner is hugely expensive for what it is. The puddings were impressive but the rest of the food was very mediocre. I wouldn't mind if it was half the price. The decor and ambience was lovely but I don't think we would stay again, we were hoping for a treat but it didn't pan out as we had hoped at all.
The resort was amazing and so magical around Christmas time. We loved every minute of our stay. Room was spacious and clean. Service was great. Food at the Grill was lovely as well as the breakfast in the Signature floor the next morning. The only thing I was surprised with was the £20 parking fee which wasn't stated anywhere when I booked. I felt the £20 was a bit steep.
First of all, the resort as a whole is amazing. My average score is based on a number of things. The break was booked for 14 of us through a golf travel operator. There was an issue with a couple of the group being deleted from the booking - not sure where the blame lies, but it resulted in a lot of back and forth at reception to get it resolved, which frustrated a large number of the group. To be fair, the reception team did try to help get it resolved as quickly as possible, but there seemed to be a lack of info passed from the early shift to the late shift, so it had to start again from scratch and I had to be present in order to show the booking info again. My biggest gripe is the extortionate amount of money you are charged at every opportunity for things that should be included as standard from a luxury resort, or at least priced fairly. £8.50 per night to park in the overground car park with no security seemed a bit steep. I think this should be complimentary, as the ones up by the golf courses are. Bottles of water were provided for the room in the morning, but the fact you are charged over £5 for a 750ml bottle when needed is not justifiable. We're not a "cheap" bunch, but the mentality does appear to be that of a nightclub whereby once you are in, you are obliged to pay whatever they want to charge you. It's a shame as the golf courses are exceptional, the views are amazing and the hotel is very nice. Still worth a visit and I would probably stay again, but would spend free time in the town 10 minutes up the road.
Hotel is nice enough and the staff are friendly. Whatever you do, don’t eat at the Merlin bar. We stopped for a lunch time snack, and I’ve never seen such a contradiction, a Rolex clock on the wall, serving Aldi frozen pizza. ** I travel every week for work, and I can honestly say, the premier inn across the road would of been a better stay. The beds would’ve been comfortable, the room would’ve been clean, the breakfast would’ve been better, and the parking a hell of a lot cheaper - if you need a comfortable hotel in the area, go elsewhere** They advertise the mulberry bar everywhere throughout the resort yet it’s been closed for 6 months. If you’re thinking about a nice relaxing stay with good drinks and food, go elsewhere. If you’re staying in the Manor House, you park on the other side of the resort and will be charged a lovely £20 for the privilege. The resort is going down hill every year. Don’t waste your money here. Update: our room is not clean. See photos of kettle and dust on towel radiator. Update 2: we’ve been moved to a signature room. Which is also dirty. The bed in the £300/night signature room, is 2 spring coil mattresses pushed together with a thin quilted, non-memory foam topper put over them. See photo. Breakfast was lovely and the staff at breakfast were all pleasant and helpful.
I’d anticipate the expense of staying at this “High End” resort location and was none the less happy to book for a quiet weekend away to celebrate my wife’s birthday. Using the website or app to do this was painful as was often left going around in circles, something that was later explained as a problem they were aware of currently. I’m not sure on how easy it is to book as so many choices with little explanation so I think if you e been before it might be ok. For a newbie to the resort not so much. For this trip, I booked over the phone which took around 40 minutes most of the time was waiting on hold automated answering system to speak with someone. We were disappointed with the “Deluxe” room as it was just like a Premier Inn” to be honest albeit the room was a little bigger. A “view” of the golf course was a stretch as we were overlooking the main entrance to the hotel, we could see what we think was a green to our right but that was it not golfers so this didn’t really bother us too much. At the point of booking I was told there was an allowance per person towards food and that as there was an offer on currently, we would only need to pay for drinks. At checkout though, I was expected to pay for the second evenings meals for both of us. I questioned this and was told that the offer expired on the first night. Following a short discussion however, it was eventually agreed to remove the charge as I had been misinformed at the point of booking. Plenty of choice and the food wasn’t bad but nothing special. Next surprise….. £40 for car parking in addition to the cost of the room, I’ve never had to pay as a guest for car parking at any hotel I’ve stayed at so as I said, a big surprise, talk about a captive audience. On leaving our room to go to breakfast we had to negotiate a plethora of cleaning utensils and trolleys, a good morning from us to staff fell on deaf ears so ‍ Overall a 2 of 5 star experience and one I won’t rush to do again I’m afraid.
Before we even checked in, the service was questionable, we popped to Merlin's bar for a drink, after approaching the bar we were sent to a table as we were unable to order at the bar, we ordered with a server and got our drinks. Half way through our drinks we were approached by a panicked server who asked our room number, we said we hadn't checked in and were immediately met with a card machine! I don't mind paying for my drinks in advance, but a bit of conversation would be nice! As other reviews have said, the hotel and rooms are dated with peeling wall paper in corridors and in rooms and scuff marks everywhere, wouldn't recommend looking down at the skirting boards as these were dirty throughout the hotel. The room was okay, quite big. But it wasn't clean. Noticed a large white stain on the runner and toothpaste on one of the towels, reported this to reception who asked if we would like it changed!? Of course, but there wasn't an apology or acknowledgement that it was bad. We visited the spa which was pretty good, but considering we had to book a 45 min slot, I did not expect it to be so busy. Hot tub was full constantly and pool was very busy but we were able to get a few lengths in. We had dinner at steak on six which was fantastic! I cannot fault the food and the servers were amazing, the toilet situation is a little interesting in comparison to the restaurant but it does the job! Breakfast was sub par and didn't match up to a premiere Inn breakfast we had recently. There was a good variety, but the sausages and eggs were overcooked, the area was chaotic with people queuing between tables. It was an okay breakfast, but not even close to worth the money. The gluten free section on a separate table looked impressive.
Stayed for 1 night with wife and son while he and I went off to the wrestling. But for just over £300 a night it isn't perfect. Room was lovely and large, plush and nice views. However bed was so soft and springy it felt like a water bed and the walls were paper thin.... We could hear every word of our neighbours conversations. Shower was also a little tatty with stains on the ceiling and areas of mould. 2 of the 3 lifts were broken during the stay and we gave up trying to find the stairs to come down for breakfast as the only door we could find looked like it was an alarmed fire door. The cheekiest part we thought was that if you want to park in the red or yellow car parks under the hotel then you have to pay an hourly rate up to £20 if you're staying over night. For the price of the room this stung a bit. The staff were lovely and friendly, especially at breakfast. As a golfer who hasn't played here yet, I'd like to come back and play/stay but the value would need to be much improved as for the price we paid it didn't live up to expectations.
The reception staff were friendly, good sized room but it wasn’t the standard double so should have been for the cost they charge. The balcony had not been cleaned and rubbish from previous visitors still outside. The doors to get out seriously need changing, dirty and very difficult to use. We were not told about the main spa being closed when reservation made which was disappointing however we used Dylan’s. The staff on the Friday were not particularly helpful or welcoming and the jacuzzi was also not working. The restaurant manager was very rude when we asked to look at the menu and we were very quickly told they were full. Was very surprised to have a self service breakfast for the price and again the staff were not very welcoming or helpful. Having stayed at the Coldra previously I thought this would be better not sure it is - shame.
