The Castle Hotel

Story

During the summer of 2010 we were made aware that the Castle was being sold. We recognised many years ago what a fabulous location Llandovery is, being surrounded amongst the rolling hills and spectacular landscapes of Carmarthenshire known as the ‘Garden of Wales’. This, coupled with a desire to get back to our ‘roots’ as a dining pub, considered the Castle well worth a look. After one viewing we just knew it was right for us. We fell for the Castles charm and presence the very first time we saw it.
Don’t tell our bank manager but all our purchases have been done by the initial ‘feel’ we have for a property – then we write a business plan !

For centuries the Castle has been at the heart of the town, a place for travellers and visitors to rest, replenish and recharge their batteries. Past famous guests include the Admiral of the fleet Lord Nelson and Lady Hamilton as well as the latter day travel writer George Borrow.

We sincerely hope to restore the Castle into everything a traditional Welsh coaching inn should be. Celebrating its past with modern fresh ideas . A wonderful relaxing environment with rustic oak beams, reclaimed flooring and roaring log fires that welcome you in winter. A sun dappled courtyard hideaway for summer evenings.

The service will be friendly and knowledgeable.
We will offer a range of the best cask Welsh beers, ciders and guest ales.
Those that love the grape will be thrilled with a list packed with quality, variety and value.

Our food will be simple, fresh, robust and tasty. The type you really want to eat.

Stay the night and you will be welcomed with beds that are so comfy folks have offered to buy them.

Currently the Castle is closed for refurbishment works, however planning permissions permitting we hope to be open as early as possible.

The hotel is a very nice quaint country hotel that's warm and welcoming. The staff were very friendly and willing to help. The restaurant served a wide range of good food at a reasonable price. I will however mentions few points that detected from my stay I was placed in one of the suits above the function room. On a Monday the function room hosts a line dancing class and on a Wednesday it has a local choir rehearsal. I only know this as most of the noise from these sessions made its way up into my room. Being there on work I had access to a decibel meter, with the doors and window closed in my room the sound from the function room was around 70db, which is just too much to be reasonably ignored. On both occasions I could hear loud music/singing till around 10pm, meaning an early night was out of the question. Compensating by going to to bar only worked for so long as it got quite expensive. The other thing that detracted from my stay was the lack of a vegetarian option at breakfast. There was a wide array of cooked breakfasts on offer but all contained meat. Which was a shame as the hotel really made an effort to support local farmers and suppliers.

Had a good time away. Good size rooms and food really good with great portion sizes. Next to a road, busy with farm traffic in the day. Calms down by 8pm. Staff friendly and helpful.

Had a drink, while we were in the area, i had a pot of tea, hubby had a pint of real ale. Which he really enjoyed. We had a warm welcome, by the staff. Wasn't there very long, we sat by the open fire which was lovely and cosy. We will probably call in for some food next time we're in the area, the menu looks good.

An absolutely beautiful place to stay. Staff extremely attentive and helpful. A beautiful old building. The only thing which could have improved our stay would be the weather :-)
