The Bull Inn at Barton Mills

About

The Bull Inn at Barton Mills is not a B&B, it’s not a hotel, but it is an award winning boutique and quirky modern day coaching Inn, located near Mildenhall, Bury St Edmunds and Newmarket in the picturesque county of Suffolk.

Story

The Inn and its dedicated owners simply radiate character, style and an eccentric passion, which is simply infectious to all those who visit. Think funky and fresh within an amazing 500 year old coaching inn.

The owners have created 15 individually designed boutique bedrooms, an AA Rosette restaurant, cosy pub with great wines, real ales and an open log fire for those cold winter evenings. There is also a fantastic courtyard to while away many a summers day with family and friends. Improvement and refurbishment never ends at The Bull, with the passionate owners always seeking and trying new, exciting and sometimes crazy ideas!

The Bull at Barton Mills has a whole wall of accolades to boast including “Best Small Hotel in Suffolk”, “Best Freehouse in East Anglia” and “Best Sunday Lunch” to mention a few and the whole business simply oozes character and a unique charm created by the hands-on owners.

Really great four nights stay. I was glad to hear the old management team with lots of great historical reviews recently returned. Loved the salmon and eggs breakfast, fish and chips dinner, and pub. Great service throughout the stay. No issues with restaurant closing early or food unavailability as I had read others had with stays managed by previous staff. All of the staff seemed genuinely excited about having the old management team back. Can’t say enough good things
We had an overnight stay for the new year celebrations. Our room was 'Daisy' most rooms being names not numbers. Quite a quirky room based on cows there's a clue in the hotel's name but a bed as comfortable as any 5 star, spacious bathroom with over bath rain shower. complimentary bottled water and flat screen TV. We fully enjoyed the celebratory evening with good food, complimentary punch on arrival and a Dubai sunrise toward the end of the evening or early morning. The DJ entertained us throughout with no break - thanks. Great stay, great night thanks to some dedicated friendly staff.
Just had a quick night stopover. Bedroom was quirky, but well equipped, albeit a bit on the small size. Bed comfortable and linen clean. Bathroom was of high quality. Good stay for the price paid for sure. Didn't eat, but the restaurant looked nice.
Stopped for a lunch on the way to Norfolk Broads. First there to order food but had to wait for 2 of our dishes for quite a while. Prices of food seemed quite high for the portion sizes but the food was nice. Nicely sited on the A11 so is convenient to stop hereService: 3/5
We were looking for somewhere to use as our new local having recently moved to the area and we tried this place for a Sunday lunch. We were told they were busy and there would be a short wait which was fine ordered two drinks and took our seats, sometime later member of staff asked if there was anything else they could bring us while we were waiting. I then showed them the glass my drink had been served in and it was filthy this was removed and replaced. The food turned up and it was the chewiest piece of beef I have had carrots looked dirty and were soggy as was the rest of the vegetables. When we went to pay I complained and in fairness the lady reduced our bill by half and gave us two £5 vouchers to use next time if we were prepared to give them another go. Let’s maybe see what happens.
This was the worst service I have had for a long time. As soon as we walked in i knew this was a mistake coming her. I had been about 4 years ago and the place was lovely but not anymore. There was a dog bowl by our table and the tables around up hadn’t been cleared up and looked like they had been that way for ages. Had to wait almost 2 hours for our main meals to come out. The meals were cold and could have done a better job cooking it at home. We had to constantly ask for drinks, to order our food to pay the bill. All we got from the very young and inexperienced staff was im so sorry. Would not recommend this place to anyone. Very disappointed as it’s such a lovely building and could be an amazing place.
What a massive disappointment , visited with friends for a Roast dinner , service is really not good our initial waiter had quite an attitude and was not very welcoming. We ordered Two large and two standard Roasts , when they arrived they all looked the same size , the waitress could not even tell the difference so we ended up with four standard but were charged for two large. The cuts of beef were not the best and reminded me of some cheap Iceland cuts, veg and roast potatoes were much better although the whole meal wasn't very hot. Our table that had been reserved for us had been taken by another group and we were put in the coldest part of the pub ,almost had to put my coat on at the table. The staff couldn't really be bothered to see if we were okay , think they were more interested in a Christmas party group. If you are going to Charge £18 for a Roast dinner in a bar area of a pub at least try and make it seem good value. We actually left and had fantastic service in a warm welcoming environment at the River side hotel and had pudding and Coffee there organised without any fuss by Suzanne who made us feel very much at home. Will not be visiting the Bull inn again
Room was quirky but cosy. Bed was really comfortable. Lots of toiletries included which were perfect for a bubble bath. Food in the restaurant was good. Staff were really helpful, especially Ella. Breakfast was good as was the coffee.
Booked for a Sunday lunch, showed through to the restaurant side and were seated to the left. The staff are friendly, food ok ,bit pricy for what it was. Only complaint the room we sat in was cold and most of us had to leave our coats on the entire time including eating. Asked a member of staff about the heat ,"yes it's always cold in here ,it will warm up when it's full". Problem was we were the only ones in there the entire time.
Booked in . First room loo not working . 2nd room not cleaned 3rd room was lovely but the bottle chandelier rattled when the elephants upstairs walked around . Room lovely and clean apart from carpet . Staff were lovely and friendly. Food gorgeous. Despite the niggles we enjoyed our stay !
