The Arthouse

About

The Old fire station (TOFS) boasts two properties the arthouse and the cedar house where contemporary meets traditional. A unique destination.

Story

The Old fire station (TOFS) boasts three properties the arthouse, cedar house and our new addition, firemans cottage where contemporary meets tradional. One of the unique features is that you can rent the houses indivdually or rent all of the houses together for a larger family or social gathering sleeping up to 12 people or 16 people.
The arthouse is a Victorian building, towering up above its adjacent properties. During Victorian times this building was used as a fire station where horse drawn fire engines would house themselves in the barn through the archway. The arthouse has been designed in a quirky fun way. The first floor living area is spacious, light with good views out to the city. There’s a modern kitchen providing a good selection of tea, coffee and cereals for guests’ independent use. On the second floor there are two bedrooms. The king room is at the front with a comfortable bed and private bathroom down the hall. The double room is situated at the back with a comfortable bed and private bathroom located downstairs.

The back house is a cedar wood clad building in a modern Scandinavian design. This property is unique to Canterbury. It is tucked away off the main road behind the arthouse. The generous living area has a reception room with two sofas, flat screen T.V, with satellite digital channels, dvd player and music centre with I-pod docking station. There’s a dining area which can seat up to 10 people and a well equipped kitchen with extra seating for four guests. Upstairs there's a spacious open plan bedroom area with a large king size bed & en-suite bathroom, plus a seating area with a pull out sofa bed.

Adjacent to the cedar house is a self- contained garden room which has a king size bed & en-suite. This room can be rented independently or rented additionally to the cedar house therefore opened up into one house. There is a courtyard garden that wraps around the house to give it a very private feel.
Fireman's Cottage at The Old Fire Station is as charming 2 bedroom Cottage with Large reception and dining area, fully fitted kitchen, bathroom and private garden.

Tricky review. In the end would I go back? NO! Pros: good location with short walk to town centre. Well equipped kitchen. Generally clean. Warm. Cons. The one parking space is down a very narrow drive at the end of which you have to do a 90 degree turn. Hard enough. But that means you have to do the same when backing out as there is no room for 3 point or even 30 point turn. The building is on 4 floors with extremely steep and narrow stairs. The bathroom for one of the bedrooms on floor 4 is on floor 2!!!!! The door of bathroom 1 does not close. The mattress in bed 1 is appalling. Springs have come to the surface and are painful to lie on and in other places there are dips! There is a main road outside bed 2 and the lounge and as it is the main London Road it is very busy even at night . The occupants could not sleep at all. In the lounge there seems to be framework for double glazing but none is fitted. Carpet on top stairs is becoming thread bare .
This house is gorgeously renovated, no detail missed. The proprietors live around the corner and kindly offered a self-check in, but still managed to pop by to greet me upon arrival! The bedroom had a comfortable bed, plenty of cosy bedding. Downstairs from the guest rooms is a lovely kitchen and common area, with fixings for tea. It is located just outside of the centre of town, well-connected by bus to town or the universities. I will definitely stay here if I am in Canterbury again!
Brilliant and quirky place to stay within easy walking distance of the town centre. Lovely little touches of personality and everything to make you feel independent, with just two rooms, it felt like a home from home. Spacious rooms. Love that breakfast provided is by a voucher for local cafe and any time so v flexible. Good for early risers and people who want lie ins alike
We had a great Hen Party weekend staying here at the Old Fire Station. Perfect location with an easy straight forward walk into the city. The accommodation was perfectly suited to hosting 11 ladies across all 3 properties. The main living area with kitchen in the Cedar House was ideal to all mingle together. Highly recommended
Great price for a 2 double bedroom cottage located near many of the local shops/supermarkets and very close to the cathedral. The cottage itself is very cosy and stocked with many things to keep you busy during your stay. Even comes with a selection of dvd's and even a coffee maker! Very satisfied
Perfect location for walking into the city. Very well equipped kitchen, en suite room out the back of the house is lovely with very comfortable bed. Excellent for site seeing and walking about.
Very quirky and stylish place with easy access to the city. There are only two rooms with use of a common living room, dining room and small kitchen. It was like home away from home .Would definetely come back again.
Very cosy. Steep stairs to get to the bedrooms, but its worth it as the place has a very cool atmosphere. Close to the city center, and some very good restaurants.
We had a great stay here for a week. Really cosy comfy beds..warm and.welcoming.
Lovely stay, very clean and relaxing place to come back to. Highly recommended! Thank you
