Sutton House

Story

Sutton House is a Grade II*-listed Tudor manor house in Homerton High Street, Hackney, London, England. It is owned by the National Trust.HistoryOriginally known as 'Bryck Place', Sutton House was built in 1535 by Sir Ralph Sadler, Principal Secretary of State to Henry VIII, and is the oldest residential building in Hackney. It is a rare example of a red brick building from the Tudor period. Sutton House became home to a succession of merchants, sea captains, Huguenot silk-weavers, Victorian schoolmistresses and Edwardian clergy. The frontage was modified in the Georgian period, but the core remains an essentially Tudor building. Oak panelled rooms, including a rare 'linen fold' room, Tudor windows and carved fireplaces survive intact, and an exhibition tells the history of the house and its former occupants. At the turn of the 18th century, Hackney was renowned for its many schools, and Sutton House contained a boys' school, with headmaster Dr Burnet, which was attended in 1818 by the novelist Edward Bulwer-Lytton. The building next became Milford House girls' school.

Admission fee is little under £6. It’s not a bad place to visit but there are plenty of attractions that you can visit in London free of charge. It’s not wheelchair friendly.Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedYes

600 Year old Tutor House. Do not miss this beautiful and authentic survivor of the Tutor Age. Fireplaces, wood paneling, and original kitchen, it's all open for you to see. Do not miss it, or you will regret it. My tour volunteer, Christine, gave us the best tour I have ever been on.Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedYes
Very cool 500-year old house in Hackney. There're information boards around the house that tell you more about what the house was like throughout the centuries. Interesting links to Henry VIII, the church, girls education, squatters and men's social club.Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedYes
It's a long time since I've been inside the house, but I remember enjoying it. Today I had a walk through Breaker's Yard today. It is a lovely little pocket park full of interesting bits with a nice feel.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo

A stunning tudor building in the heart of the vibrant hackney. Local history and community runs through the heart of the house. Showcasing the different stories of the house and what it once looked like. When you slow down and admire the hidden gems of the house, you realise just how beautiful and unique sutton house is, and its truly for everyone
