Lovely place to visit. For me the building,is delightfully eccentric pretend gothic architecture. That said some of the rooms inside are quite beautiful. It is well worth booking a tour. The staff are very friendly and welcoming and I was most impressed that the lady at the desk was able to speak fluently in French. The shop and cafe are lovely. The grounds are charming with some excellent child friendly activities.
I’d never heard of this place before, I just saw it pop up on the map and thought it would be an interesting day outnnI started at the cafe and ordered a cream tea and a feta pastrynThe scone was the most delicious scone I’ve ever had, homemade by the chef, I will definitely go back just for that!nThe pastry was also deliciousnThe chef was so lovely and attentive, you can tell she’s so passionate about what she doesnHer attention to detail, and flavours, is spot onnSo do not skip the cafe!nnThe house itself is so unique and I found myself sawing wow at almost every turn!nThe staff were very attentive and informative with the history of the house so you will learn a lot as you walk aroundnnAfter the house, I wondered around the gardensnThey’re well kept and nice to relax when the weather is nicennI would highly recommend Strawberry Hill House for a day out, especially if you enjoy creativity, art and attention to detailnAnd make sure you order the cream tea at the cafe too, don’t miss out!
Horace Walpole's iconic country house, the first of its kind in neogothic style. Architecturally speaking, this house was hugely influential, from Karl Friedrich Schinkel's gothic buildings to Lyndhurst Castle in the Hudson River valley. Beautiful interiors and super helpful guides. Great gift store and café.
Loved this place, I originally heard that it was the inspiration for the first gothic novel 'The Castle of Otranto' and you can really see it!nnIt's the most unusual manor house I've visited so far and it's full of little wonders, plus the volunteers have so many fun stories to share nnDon't forget to stop in the cafe, the toasties are 10/10 I might steal some ideas for when I make, and the cream tea was perfect!
An absolute hidden gem - self guided tour but in reality each room has a highly knowledgeable volunteer bursting to tell you the history and do so with much enthusiasm and gusto! The house is highly unusual and unique - C17th century Dutch stained glass, Roman bronze statues, Robert Adam fireplace... Also, half price entry if you travel by train - well worth the journey.
