As you may be able to tell this was shot late in the day. I would have liked to have gone out to the lighthouse, but maybe some other time. This was shot from the point of land north of the point going out to the lighthouse. This was really The Shot for that lighthouse at that late afternoon. It had a number of elements that are unique to the place and time. Having a sea gull go though the shot was a nice addition even if it was a blur. Having the sun low on the horizon gave the lighthouse, land, rolling waves and the small boat to the left more intensity/ contrast while the sea was darker and more intensely blue as there was little reflected light off of it. Having the tide low enough to cause wave cresting at the shoal in the foreground and some in another shoal closer to the lighthouse added more activity to the image. Having the image format horizontal to match the linearity of the horizon, wave action and the point of land in the image adds to the strong horizon which has a calming feel. I look at this image and feel calm, even though I had to run out there to shoot the image. After finishing the images I was able to bask in the satisfaction of getting the shot and the beauty of this place and time. I hope you enjoy this image as much as I do in providing it. As a technicality St Mary's Island is a "trumbolo" which is an island at high tide, but a point or isthmus at low tide. This just one of the odd things we learn in traveling though a life .

Beautiful place. Great for kids. Full of rock pools and climbing the lighthouse is fun too. Plus seals. They have returned this year...we saw 3 so far. Check crossing times though to get the full day we forgot to but hit it lucky.

Great to go up the light house, bit scary if your afraid of heights. Kids love the rock pools and spotting local wildlife life such as seals. Great family day out.

Some great views from the top of lighthouse. There were grey seals on the island when we visited. There is a decent visitor centre and cafe although it looks like it could do with an update.

Just beautiful even in winter. Walked along to lighthouse. Blowing a gale wind was like ice. But what a bracing afternoon today Wednesday 1 18th. Loved it.
