St Mary's

Story

St Mary's Church is a city centre church in Lichfield, Staffordshire in the United Kingdom, located on the south side of the market square. A church is reputed to have been on the present site since at least 1150 but the current building dates from 1870 and is a Grade II* listed building. The church was remodelled in the early 1980s and now serves a variety of purposes including a social centre for senior citizens, coffee shop and the Lichfield Museum, which celebrates 2,000 years of the history of Lichfield. The church still operates for religious services in a small chapel at its northern end.HistoryEarly BuildingsIt is understood that the current St Mary’s church is the fourth incarnation of the church on the site in the market square. It is thought that the first church on the site was built when the town was laid out by Bishop Clinton in around 1150 although first mention of it is in the 13th century.A fire in 1291 destroyed most of the town including its churches. St Mary’s was rebuilt in the 14th century. This medieval church consisted of an aisled chancel, an aisled nave, a west tower and a spire. The tower is believed to have been built in 1356. It was at this time that St. Mary's, achieved a special prominence in the city as the church of the guild of St. Mary and St. John the Baptist, founded in 1387 by the amalgamation of two existing guilds. This guild ran affairs of the city until 1538.From 17th century the north side of the church became the burial place of Anthony Dyott (d. 1662) and later members of the Dyott family, who were the owners of Freeford Manor. The present church has a chapel dedicated to the Dyotts at its northern end.

I vusitet The Hub for a Acoustic session on Sunday evening as my partner was performing there. I really liked the atmosphere and the performance itself. Lovely place almost like a candlelight concert. I enjoyed it and would recommend anyone to visit at least once
A small, but ideal Café to visit. On the first floor, via a lift or stairs. An exhibition was on, of which I didn't visit. The coffee is via a machine, but it is flavoursome. Snacks and Cakes are available.Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
We popped in for a cuppa and a bit of cake. The place is clean and tidy and our dog was allowed in so that was great. The tea was lovely and the cake superb, the staff were great and good music was playing in the back. There isn't a massive selection but it is a small shop so no surprises there. Nevertheless it was a lovely welcome break.
A Really lovely setting for a small intimate show, Very well organised, staff very helpful and welcoming, nice little bar area to get drinks all added to a perfect night listening to Guy Chambers who was so personable and just a fantastic pianist, Great Night, Great Show , would highly recommend watching something at The Hub at St Mary's Lichfield.

Went here to see the GAIA. Had a terrible time finding/getting near to it, with 2 ladies with disabilities on a Saturday, because of the market being open, a lot of the roads around it where closed to motor vehicles, Google maps doesn't allow for this!!! The whole market was very busy & it took us a while to navigate through the crowds of people and stalls! Once we did get there I was a little disappointed as the GAIA needs a much bigger space to really appreciate it, having said that we did enjoy looking at the world!! Afterwards we did have a wonder around the market and had a burger.

Beautiful place for quality food, at a reasonable price in Lichfield Town Centre. I found myself craving something light and they had more than two vegan options for this so plenty of choice in my opinion. Ordered a Quinoa Salad & they went out their way to double/triple check the dressings were in fact vegan. I had an iced & lemon wedge water. Has Wi-fi thats not awful to join. Accessible plugs for a laptop & serves alcohol too incase youd like a tipple. Highly reccomend the place. Price a big thing for me and £2.85 for an oat milk coffee is actually brilliant considering all places in lichfield besides greggs are north of £3.50. Cheapest being the Tasty Cafe & Boomers. If you want to do some business, have lunch & a coffee with a view. This is the perfect place for you. Also beautiful local art, throughout.. & Child friendly. 1* less as i didnt get to look at a menu and no prices are visible so that would have been the extra. I think its important for people to see how much they are paying for items without a price or the menu to pick from. But overall fantastic.
