Story

Samuel Johnson Birthplace Museum is a biographical museum and bookshop located in the centre of the city of Lichfield, Staffordshire, in England. The building is a Grade I listed building situated at the corner of Market Street and Breadmarket Street opposite the market square. The museum opened in 1901 and is dedicated to the life and works of the author and lexicographer Samuel Johnson who wrote the first authoritative Dictionary of the English Language. Johnson's father built the house in 1707 and Samuel was born in the house on 18 September 1709 and spent the majority of his first 27 years in the house before leaving for London in 1737. The house was used as a commercial property for various trades between the time of Johnson's death in 1784 until the house was bought for the city by John Gilbert in 1900 for the purpose of retaining the building as a museum to Johnson. The house remains in active use as a museum.ArchitectureThe house was built on the corner of Breadmarket Street and Market Street in 1707 by Johnson's father, Michael. The house is built of timber frame and brick infill, now covered in stucco. It is in a Palladian style with four storeys, the top storey being lit with dormer windows which were removed in the 18th century and restored in the 1970s. The front of the house faces onto the Market Square and on this side the upper storeys are jettied outwards over the ground floor. As built this projecting front was supported at each end by a plain pillar, these continued upwards on the corners of the upper storeys by pilasters of the Ionic order. The facing of the house was red brown brick and the roof tiles were blue black. In the 18th century two central pillars were added and one was removed in the late 19th century. In the 19th century the pilasters were removed and the outside was stuccoed.

The Samuel Johnson Birthplace Museum is a delightful gem in Lichfield. Stepping inside feels like traveling back in time, offering a charming glimpse into the life of one of England's greatest literary figures. The exhibits are thoughtfully curated, and the atmosphere is warm and inviting—a must-visit for any history or literature enthusiast! Plus, the entry is for free
A much bigger building than you first think. I spent about 90 minutes there, as there are 4 floors of information. We didn't realise at first but there is a "way round" following the information boards, starting in the basement and working upwards. To be honest I wasn't massively interested in SJ but it was quite interesting and worth learning about. The house itself is lovely and interesting with a view over the market. The book shop is okay and the lady there was informative and friendly.
Really appreciated the "Johnson in his century" exhibit on the second floor — it's a simple thing but this type of formatting is just so effective in contextualising history which can too easily be a muddle of names and dates. Also had fun using the ink blotter on the first floor and flipping through the dictionary facsimile on the top floor. I was pleasantly surprised to find that entry is free given that it is a smaller museum far away from the London belt and hope people donate generously. I came away with a greater interest in the man behind the first definitive English-language dictionary and would happily visit again. In the meantime, I'm off to visit its London counterpart, 17 Gough Square and Hodge the Cat!
Enjoyable visit. Good museum. Staff friendly. Film good about Samuel Johnson . Some of interactive displays did not work. Books and souvenirs for sale. Would benefit from a toilet on site.
This museum is free. You can leave a donation if you wish to. Very interesting. Over 5 floors but as it is inside a house with bookshop on ground floor, stairs very narrow as befitting for the age of the building. Learnt a lot about Samuel Johnson. I would probably go again.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo

A fascinating man of singular wit, worthy of visiting and learning more about him. Museum is in an old building on several floors, donations are welcome as it's free to enter. Currently they want you to pre book online during covid, which was easy to do.
Interesting little museum in the centre of Lichfield, friendly staff and lots of good information on Samuel Johnson, plus an original copy of his dictionary, free to enter but you need to book a slot.
