Story

St Mary-at-Hill Church for Billingsgate

St Mary-at-Hill has served in the Parish of Billingsgate for nearly a thousand years. An ‘ancient church’ on this site is mentioned in a legal document dated 1177, so we can conjecture with some certainty that a church dedicated to St Mary the Virgin has stood here since at least the end of the 11th Century. Billingsgate Quay was an important Anglo-Saxon harbour in the 10th and 11th centuries. The route north into the old city would have led past the church. The steep rise of the way up from the river gave it the name of St Mary at or on the Hill. The original church was no doubt smaller than the present building which has been extended, altered and renovated throughout its history. The Churchwardens’ accounts from the C15th inform us that by then it had side chapels dedicated to St Stephen, St Katherine, St Ann and St Christopher.

Mission

There has been a church here in Billingsgate for at least 1000 years, and today St Mary's continues this ministry, serving a thriving community in the busy heart of the City of London.

Return visit, Monday afternoon. Enterence via Lovat Lane. A beautiful church of Wrenn servicing the community especially Billingsgate and fishmongers. A nice quiet place to take time out.
Friendly, inclusive sung eucharist Lutheran worship services held here every Sunday at 11am. The post service refreshment table is very welcoming. Also excellent Bach vespers held on the last Sunday of the month. 6.30pm.Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
Beautiful and serene 14th Century Church, partially damaged during the Great Fire of 1666. Sir Christopher Wren rebuilt the damaged area, keeping three intact Mediaeval walls. It should be described as Anglican rather than Episcopal a US-only terminology, Google please note, as per St Mary’s own website. Definitely worth visiting and attending a service.
I love the idea of thinking Mr Thomas Tallis did use this very building as a choir boy back in the 16th century. Not the same organ, not the same architecture and decoration, but they do fit together quite well for our contemporary eyes and imagination. I especially love the lunchtime recitals offer - on Tues, Thurs and Fridays. Magnificent organ!
A little gem today completely surounded by recent well designed modern buildings. The contrast is very interesting. A very pretty corner of the city of London.
Very pretty building tucked away in the City. Worth a visit.
Gorgeous church with plenty of natural light. It also has excellent acoustic for classical music events which is a regularly feature here.
Great lunchtime recitals - bring a sandwich
A totally wonderful church. When I visited there was a young American chap who was giving a recital, Mozart I think and he seemed very nervous waiting for people to turn up. I heard him practising before I went in and he was very good, so hope the recital went well for him as he was such a nice chap. The Organ looks beautiful and you can see the pipes in one of my photos. Wonderful church and will visit again and hope I have time to sit down and listen to any music recitals when I am there. A "must re-visit"
The Thursday Conversations are a wonderful innovation. Interaction with a range of interesting speakers, ably overseen and moderated by Reverend Rose Hudson - Wilkin. The opening service and songs by the resident choir are a showcase of excellence in both music, ministry and pastoral care. I haven't experienced a bad one! Both are going from strength to strength and I expect to hear and see more of the choir in the coming months
