St. Katharine Cree Church

Story

St Katharine Cree is a Church of England church in the Aldgate ward of the City of London, on the north side of Leadenhall Street near Leadenhall Market. It was founded in 1280. The present building dates from 1628–30. Formerly a parish church, it is now a guild church.HistoryFormer buildingThe parish served by the church existed by 1108, when it was served by the Augustinian Holy Trinity Priory, Aldgate, also called Christ Church, which was founded by Maud, queen at the time of King Henry I. The parishioners used the priory church but this proved unsatisfactory and disruptive to the priory's activities. The prior partly resolved the problem in 1280 by founding St Katharine Cree as a separate church for the parishioners. The site of the present church was originally in the priory's churchyard and it is possible that the church began as a cemetery chapel. It took its name from the priory, "Cree" being a corrupted abbreviation of "Christ Church". It was initially served by a canon appointed by the prior but this did not prove satisfactory either, so in 1414 the church was established as a parish church in its own right. The present tower was added about 1504.Describing the building at the end of the 16th century, John Stow wrote "this church seemeth to be very old; since the building whereof the high street hath been so often raised by pavements that now men are fain to descend into the said church by divers steps, seven in number."

This poor old lady needs a clean and some repairs. This church of the workers in the Diocese of London perhaps could benefit from assistance from the royals church in the same Diocese.
One of churches that has survived the Great London Fire. It’s quite historic in architecture too. It serves as a worship place for various communities
What a lovely old church! Such an enjoyable visit = made everyone. Better "by the kindness of the vicar & staff." Who kindly interrupted their lunch, to let me see the churchyard too. Well worth a visit!!

One of the City's lesser known garden spaces, the churchyard of St Katharine Cree, is a shaded green and quiet oasis. It is accessed via a gate and narrow passageway from Mitre Lane. The churchyard has a number of stone tombs, and some gravestones leaning against the wall of the church hall. The eastern end of the churchyard is known as The Fitch Garden, and features a large decorative stone fountain attached to a wall which incorporates the stonework from a former entrance to the churchyard dating from 1631. There are several wooden benches around the churchyard, but all are looking a bit sorry for themselves, and are in need of some TLC or replacement as of March 2020. A beautiful City Church. The churchyard behind the church is not normally accessible, however a member of the clergy kindly showed me it.
Beautiful ornate interior 13th century church with Tudor tower. Bells are run from the porch area at ground level. The chancel has a rose window, supposedly modelled on the larger one in Old St Paul's Cathedral.

Beautiful but it got quite cold by the end of the concert. Also lacking toilet facilities especially for ladies!
