We saw John Grant at Hackney Church on a Friday night and were really impressed by the venue. The acoustics were fantastic, and there was plenty of space while still feeling part of the crowd. Getting in and out was pretty easy though I’m not sure how accessible it is for disabled visitors, since there were steps. The seating above the standing area looked comfortable, but it might feel a bit removed from the action. The downsides? Drinks were on the pricey side £6.75 for a can of lager, and there was a long queue for both the bar and the portaloos. But, given it's a church accommodating more people than it was built for, that’s somewhat understandable. All in all, a great spot for a gig with a vibe that’s way more interesting than your standard venue, though it’s not ideal in terms of amenities.
Clean, cosy and spacious venue. I enjoyed watching John Grant perform here with all his synthesisers and loud bass sounds so that says a lot. Also, my recorded videos of his performances were nice and clear.Visited onWeekendWait time1 hr+Reservation recommendedNot sure
Had a brilliant night here.. very friendly, polite staff, well-organised venue. Relatively quick to get in. Cloakroom at the back outside £3/item. Great cocktails. Other reviewers said that the sound used to be bad but that seems to have been fixed now! Although we stayed in the centre of the room. What an amazing place for a gig.Visited onWeekdayWait time1 hr+Reservation recommendedYes
Excellent venue. Saw John Grant again here. Saw Gary Numan here the year before. Small and intimate, but big enough to give the crowd buzz...Visited onWeekdayWait timeUp to 10 minReservation recommendedYes
Went to a concert on a Thursday evening, managed to find parking just outside the entrance. It is a lovely small venue so it wasn't too crowded. Security felt good. There were mobile toilets outside so hygiene not great but wasn't expecting more. Bar staff were nice but over £6 for a 330ml can of beer is definitely steep. Acoustics were nice indie rock so a very pleasant evening.
I've only been here once so it may have been unique to the set-up used at the time but the acoustics were a little "echoey". Distracted a little from the performance but only a little. Doors opened at 7 pm with support act coming on around 8 pm and main act at 9 pm. That said enjoyed the performance and the venue was good. This is a church "by day" and was clearly designed to house other events - the double bar at the rear is well set-up. There's a balcony section which was surprisingly high but gave good views albeit from a distance. The staff were great, the facilities were clean. The toilets are individual and gender neutral. Very easy to get to, 5 minutes walk from Hackney Central. Seemed safe to use the path through the park which was well lit but the latest I went through this at 10:30 pm. Otherwise use the pedestrianised high street but there are plenty of food delivery people whizzing around.
Beautiful Venue for a concert and has a small bar. Beautiful architecture and building.Visited onWeekdayWait time10–30 minReservation recommendedYes
I've seen a few gigs at Hackney Church, and for acoustic set ups, single elecronica and not too noisy bands the sound here can be excellent, but for anything more complex, shoegazey or heavy the acoustics in the church just don't work. Often the mixing can fall really flat, and you end up hearing nothing but compression. For the right gig the venue is lovely, but for the wrong one you can't hear anything. Either some magical soundengineers need to be hired to adjust this problem or avoid for gigs that are heavy or complex.
Really fun venue for live music, Deadmau5 put on an awesome show! Had seen complaints about the audio inside the church but there were no such complaints from me! Sounded great. It definitely gets very, very warm inside so make sure you dress accordingly!Visited onWeekdayWait timeUp to 10 minReservation recommendedYes
Terrible acoustics for music, absolute rip-off prices for beer £6.80 for a coke can sized unknown lager and a queue to exit all 2,000 people from one set of double doors as they don't open the others up. There are a few parking spaces out front for around £7.60 for the evening, but surrounding resident parking bays are free after midday, and neighbouring zones free after 6pm
