Amazing architecture by Hawksmore. Pepper pot tower. It was bombed during the war and the inside was rebuilt but exterior remain intact.
Some of the worst, loudest and longest bell ringing I've ever had the displeasure of hearing. I don't understand why it's needed from 10-3pm on Saturdays if not to annoy the general public.
Beautiful church, fall of history.
Always pop in when I'm up that way. Got a warm welcome last November, even though they had never met me before. Today April '24, the church was empty, but still open. They run several groups there, including football for most ages, and tea & cake mornings. The old nature/wildlife centre formally a mortuary that is out the back is due for funding for refurbishment. I hope this happens for them. The gardens in the grounds are worth a visit too.
Although the church was closed, the park is pleasant and near a mural at the site of Cable Street, an historic site during the 1930s.
Middle of the Road/ anglo catholic Anglican Church occasional incense, liberal views on women priests, traditional hymns, no rock band or sofas
Grade I Listed Hawksmoor designed Baroque church restored interior on a wide footprint. A rich and intriguing parish history includes an involvement and commitment to new migrant communities and ensuing renown for the welcoming hands-on support and succour offered. Set in a plain grassed area and garden former cemetery next to St.George Town Hall with the Cable Street mural and old nature centre ruins in immediate proximity.
A prayerful and fun community who loves people and loves Shadwell. Relaxed Church gatherings at 10:30 Sundays where all are welcome
We hired the main church as a rehearsal space for our community band. Fabulous space and acoustics, can't wait to perform there again when the world re-opens fully!
A normal Anglican church not high, not low, not "happy slappy" with an outstanding commitment to supporting the local and wider communities. The building is listed, being an almost 300 years old Hawksmoor, with renovation from WW2 bomb damage done in a thoughtful 1960s style which, amazingly, works very well. It is now a "resource church" for the CoE and there are three vicars thankfully one is female who conduct services along with two curates who are a married couple. Well worth a visit!
