Great spaces considering their origin and the company has done well adapting them to their needs, aside from noisy air handling systems, which are generally switched off during the show. The cafe serves what they call 'meals' but are in fact just microwaved chunks of frozen food with a bit of spinach on the side but the atmosphere is congenial and the staff helpful and friendly. Unfortunately the show we saw had ear splittingly high volume sound cues but that will vary depending on the individual production of course.

I've been to two previous incarnations of the Southwark playhouse. This venue has two spaces, called descriptively the "large" and the "little". They are both flexible spaces, allowing multiple stage set ups, from traditional stages to plays in the round and even, on one occasion, a recreation of a world war 1 trench. The spaces lack the atmosphere of the previous venue under the London bridge arches, although I imagine it makes the set designers' lives a bit simpler - and I haven't noticed any rumbling train noises, which had punctured many a poignant moment... The bar has a reasonable range of craft drinks, and serves food from a small kitchen. There are not quite enough seats if you turn up late, although the crowd often thins out due to staggered performance times. Sometimes you can even see the performers and crew in the bar after the play. Which brings me to the reason we are there - the plays. The venue is small, but offers an eclectic mix of shows. They often have children friendly performances, especially around Christmas. Most plays generally fall on the experimental side, whether with new writing or revivals. With small venue sizes, most performances are intimate - and the venue remains one of my favourite theatres in London, even if I'll always miss the damp and claustrophobic previous venue.

One of the most intimate spaces to watch a musical with full production values and high quality cast. A friendly atmosphere with great staff who seem to care about the show that's on. Also has new writing well with seeing again in an intimate setting. It's easy to get to and will worth a visit.

Intimate off-West End theatre near the Elephant & Castle. Easy to get to via bus or tube (Borough tube station) and a third the price of the West End. Actors usually have a wide experience coumtry-wide and plays/musicals can be interesting and enjoyable. Food and drink available as well.

This is one of the best off-west-end venues going, the bar sells good drinks for a good price, and good food also. Must have seen about 7 productions here and they have all been truly excellent. Facilities are good, close to Elephant and Castle, Waterloo, and London Bridge.
