I love this place, but then I did grow up here. As far as I'm aware it's still the longest pleasure pier in the world at 1.34 miles...that's 2.16 kilometres for our continental friends. There's a small train that runs the length of the pier, if I remember correctly it's £4. I would check with the pier before hand if you're reliant on this to get to the end as it seems to be out of order quite a bit. Personally I like to walk, once at the end there's some great views back to Southend, and indeed all the way along to Hadliegh too.

The attractive glass tower is one way to enter, then up the stairs or the lift to the pier. Here you can take the train or take a walk along the 2.2 mile pier, enjoying the view of sand, sea and the sweep of buildings along the coastline. There is seating at regular intervals and at the end you can stop for some light refreshment, inside a glass fronted cafe, or out on the sheltered decking, looking out to sea. There is also a fascinating life-boat museum to visit. From the start of you journey you may be aware that you are enjoying breathing in the fresh sea air, away from the hustle and bustle of the noise and business of life on land.

One of worlds longest pier resurrected after 2005 devastating fire. Has a train service for the lazy ones. Good experience. Dress for cold wind.
